Our #PartnerSpotlight series comes to a close with a focus on the Joint Research Centre - European Commission. The JRC provides independent, evidence-based #knowledge and #science, supporting #EU policies to positively impact #society. As a department of the European Commission, the JRC plays a key role at multiple stages of the #policy cycle. It works closely with other Commission departments, EU institutions and agencies, as well as with scientific partners and policy organisations in #Europe and internationally. The JRC offers scientific expertise and competences from a very wide range of scientific disciplines in support of almost all EU policy areas. The JRC’s involvement in the #SPARCCLE project will be spearheaded by the Directorate for Energy, Transport & Climate and the Directorate for Sustainable Resources. In SPARCCLE, the JRC will be involved in a number of activities, primarily focused on new high-resolution #demographic projections, climate impacts on #biomass production, vulnerability and damage estimates, and integration of climate impacts in integrated assessment modelling. #JRC #HorizonEU #Climate #Resilience #Europe

I am inviting input from diverse stakeholders, including States, international and regional organizations, civil society, academia, and others, to inform my UN-mandated study for the EMRTD on "Climate Justice, Sustainability, and the Right to Development." This study aims to advance actionable insights and practical recommendations for embedding climate justice into the global climate agenda, ensuring that no one is left behind in the quest for a sustainable future. Stakeholders are encouraged to provide detailed responses and innovative solutions to the questions in the "Call for Input" to help shape a transformative, inclusive, and equitable approach to addressing the climate crisis. - Input/comments may be sent to the EMRTD secretariat: ohchr-emrtd@un.org - Email subject line: Input for EMRTD study "Climate Justice, Sustainability, and the Right to Development" - Deadline - 20 February 2025 00:00 (Geneva time) https://lnkd.in/g82ub6Ea #climatejustice #climateaction #mcmasteruniversity #EMRTD #CHRRJ

New Study from Columbia Climate School confirms the robustness of key nature-based climate solutions #NbS 🌳. This study reveals that four major nature-based climate solutions commonly used by companies and entities to claim carbon credits, such as the #conservation or #reforestation of tropical forests and the conservation or reforestation of temperate forests, have solid scientific foundations. 🌲 #NbS are strategies focused on conserving, restoring, or managing natural environments to mitigate GHG emissions or remove carbon from the atmosphere. Over 100 signatories of the Paris Accords, including Indonesia, Colombia, and China, are already using these solutions to meet their climate commitments 🌡️. Co-author Ruth DeFries, Chief Academic Officer at Columbia Climate School, mentioned that urgent climate mitigation needs scientifically sound approaches. She emphasized that we must focus on effective actions and continue developing other #NbS. Co-author Steven Hamburg, Chief Scientist at the Environmental Defense Fund firmly believes that #NbS are crucial for our climate goals. 🌐 This study confirms the strong science behind four major solutions and highlights the need for more research on others💡. 💥Broadening our understanding of the varied impacts of climate assemblies KNOCA’s updated Impact Evaluation Framework highlights the breadth and diversity of possible impacts, encouraging a more thorough and systematic approach to impact evaluation. 💬 Thoughts on the framework from those working with climate action and participatory democracy: ✍️ “I’m delighted that KNOCA is sharing its updated Impact Evaluation Framework. The European Climate Foundation sees great potential in the more extensive roll-out and embedding of climate assemblies, as a tool to deliver a fair and effective transition. We need to better understand the conditions under which assemblies have meaningful impacts - on policy, politics, and society more broadly. Applying the Impact Evaluation Framework can help ensure we keep learning as much as possible to support ever-more robust assembly practice.” - Erica Hope, European Climate Foundation ✍️ “While the number of Climate Assemblies has steadily grown in recent years, our understanding of their impact remains rather limited. KNOCA's impact evaluation framework with its nine different impact categories can help us to close this gap and to provide us with a more nuanced picture of the effects that Climate Assemblies exert (or not) in various areas.” - Dr. Constantin Schäfer, ifok GmbH ✍️” Academics and practitioners have long been interested in the impacts of climate assemblies, but most have adopted quite selective approaches. The evaluation framework proposed here is more comprehensive, solid and exciting, and as such will add valuably to this important field.” - Anders Blok, Københavns Universitet - University of Copenhagen 🔍 By examining both intended and unintended impacts, the framework supports a broader understanding of how climate assemblies contribute to change. 📖 Read more about the framework here: https://lnkd.in/dfChW-nd #impactevaluationframework #KNOCA #CAST #climateassemblies #delibwave #climategovernance #climate #impact

I am grateful and honored to share that our empirical study has been accepted for publication in the Climate and Development Journal (ranked as B according to the ABDC). "The Pull vs Push Approach to Building Climate Change Adaptive Capacity: Does Innovation Matter?" Coauthored with Angie Abdelzaher, PhD (AUC) and Silvana Chambers PhD (UHCL) It's been a pleasure working on this paper with you both to investigate the impact of governance and innovation on climate change adaptive capacity. #UHCL, #AUC, #climatechange, #innovation, #climatepolicy, #climatedevelopmentjournal, #UHCLMBA

"Second, we examine how infrastructures are approached in this literature and conclude that the reviewed works almost exclusively associate infrastructure with physical supply systems. This is paradoxical since several of them also advocate a socio-technical perspective on infrastructures, which would require much more substantiation of the social aspects than they seem to provide." #three #dimensions #of #innovation for the #energy #transition CETPartnership ERA-Net Smart Energy Systems Ludwig Karg Tanja Suni Angela Berger Isabel Cabrita Michel de Nigris Hannele Holttinen Kristina Starborg Fredrik Lundström Lisa Lundmark
How do Science and Technology Studies (STS) and Infrastructure Studies contribute to climate mitigation research? This advanced review just out in WIREs Climate Change assesses the conceptual and methodological treatments in this field, uses literature evidence to identify research gaps, and suggests potential topics for future research. We unpack how scholarship in the field has learned from STS, including methodology for studying infrastructures and the socio-technical dimensions of infrastructures. https://lnkd.in/dHuWGiVD With thanks to co-authors: Govert Valkenburg Mikko J.
