To honour our veterans today, we mark this D-Day 80th anniversary by continuing our support to the armed forces and their families. During the Second World War, Costain engineers helped create the Mulberry Harbours, a floating concrete port that was towed in sections across the English Channel to give the Allies a logistics foothold in France in the days following the D-Day invasion. In total, 213 precast reinforced concrete caissons had to be floated in secret across the Channel to Normandy where they were sunk into the seabed and acted as breakwaters, creating temporary harbours. Within the harbours, engineers had to establish 23 floating jetties, each 1.2km long resting on 670 pontoons. These provided troops with artificial havens to shelter ships arriving for the Normandy invasions of 1944. I believe this will be the new „Pearl Harbor 202X“ scenario. I’m just imagining enemy commerical Fishing Vessels loitering off Naval Fleet centers quietly dropping off lethal USVs headed for DDGs and CVNs at 0300. Pulling right up to those water security barriers, launching a barrage of rockets and hopefully causing another „Bonhomme Richard“ fire incident. Ukraine is showing NATO what is technically possible NOW. Gone are the days of GWOT ATFP policies, coastal defense is BACK! Known as a legend in the field, the M270 Multiple Launch Rocket System (M270 MLRS) is a highly mobile, automatic system that fires surface-to-surface rockets and missiles from the MLRS® Family of Munitions (MFOM). Lockheed Martin is modernizing existing systems to protect soldiers with combat-proven reliability for decades to come. The company are upgrading launchers with new 600 HP engines, fire control system and an improved armored cab for customers, including the United Kingdom, Italy and United States to ensure capability and support through 2050. Enhancements enable the MLRS to fire the newest next-generation munitions, like the Extended-Range GMLRS (ER GMLRS) and Precision Strike Missile (PrSM). Upgrades improve crew and system survivability, and offer interoperability with partner nations as well as the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) forces. Huge news from Crimea.   The day after the S-400 air-defence launcher was destroyed, Ukrainian forces conducted an amphibious assault operation on the Crimean Peninsula. This is the first time that Ukraine has admitted that its ground forces have been involved in operations in Crimea since Crimea was occupied by Russia.   It may be an accident of timing but 900 Ukrainian marines finished training with the British Royal Marines only 2 weeks ago. As the British government press release says, the training included how '…to conduct small boat amphibious operations, including beach raids'.   With Russian ground lines of communication looking ever more fragile, in the light of the damage to and destruction of the bridges linking Crimea to the mainland, and attacks from aerial drones, missiles and naval drones, we can now add a ground attack to the list of psychological pressures building up on Russian forces in Crimea.   https://lnkd.in/gi8C2xTJ   https://lnkd.in/g54MjJN9

The Marines will soon test a prototype logistics supply #drone inspired by semi - #submersible narco #uncrewed vessels, according to reports from #WEST2024 #naval #defenseindustry show. The upcoming Project Convergence operational event will allow the Marine Corps to test the #UUV ability to perform resupply missions without adversary detection, due to its minimal wake and low-profile.
