Last month, we had the opportunity to collaborate with the University of Denver's Collegiate Recovery Program for a special event. The DU Recovery Program provides support to students on their journey toward recovery from addiction and substance use disorder. For the event, we teamed up with Soul Dog Rescue to create a puppy pen where students could learn more about our PAWsitive Recovery program, explore available recovery services on campus, and spend quality time with puppies! It was a day filled with joy, connection, and meaningful conversations. We thank our PAWsitive Recovery volunteers, the Collegiate Recovery Program, and Soul Dog Rescue for their incredible partnership and for making this event possible. 🐾 #spcai #spcainternational #pawsitiverecovery #animalrescue #wedorecover #puppies #dogs #recoverycommunity#universityofdenver #collegiatepecoveryprogram #recoverysupport #addictionrecovery #souldogrescue #animalwelfare

Discussions of domestic violence, abuse, homelessness, and other difficult living situations almost always focus on the human victims- as they should. But animals are often involved in these situations, too, which can cause added complications. Victims are sometimes reluctant to leave an abusive or unsafe living situation because they fear leaving their pet behind, while those with limited resources, such as elderly or homeless individuals may struggle to give their pets the care they need. Social worker Carol Ann Adams joined Julie Fudge Smith and Tina Spring to talk about how best to help both people and pets who find themselves in a crisis situation.CONTENT WARNING: This episode contains discussions of domestic abuse and intimate partner violence. Listeners with small children or who are particularly sensitive to these topics may want to exercise discretion when listening. For show notes and more please go to: Your Family Dog

It is time to challenge this bias and recognize the true nature of Pitbulls a breed that is just as capable of love and happiness as any other. It is crucial to acknowledge that the fear associated with Pitbulls is a result of human neglect and abuse. These loyal companions are not inherently aggressive or dangerous, but rather a product of their environment. By perpetuating the belief that all Pitbulls are aggressive, we overlook the potential for rehabilitation and positive change. It is time that we shift our focus towards addressing the root causes of aggression, such as irresponsible ownership and lack of proper training. Pitbulls are often the first to be abandoned and the last to be adopted from shelters. This unfortunate reality stems from the stigma attached to the breed. It is disheartening to witness these loving and affectionate dogs being denied the opportunity to live a happy life simply due to their breed. By perpetuating bans and restrictions, we are limiting the chances for these misunderstood animals to find loving homes.Rather than imposing blanket bans and restrictions, focus on responsible pet ownershipand insurance coverage. It's dangerous when someone can decide to ban a breed; with one there can be another.
When will the stigma associated with the English Staffordshire Terrier (Pitbull) stop! When will the bullying by State and Country bans stop! I advocate for Pitbulls. The most misunderstood breed, the first to be abandoned, the first to be passed by in the shelters and the first to be euthanized. It’s so disheartening the fear that exists from people. The fear in the dog is created by human neglect and abuse. They don’t deserve to be exciled and denied a chance to live a happy life! I have many friends who have Pitbulls and they are just the most loving and happy dogs!

*** TRIGGER WARNING: The following blog discusses violence against children *** * * * Perception is king in a small town. If the family appeared normal in the public eye, all was well, regardless of what happened behind closed doors. It’s how my parents operated.
