Operation Ōtūmatua, a 2-day initiative to deliver bushfire relief in the Port Hills, Christchurch is set to kick off this Saturday, 2 March. There are limited spaces for volunteers still available. Why we're going: The Port Hills area experienced a large bushfire from 14 February 2024 which caused significant damage to a small number of privately owned properties in the area. Following engagement with impacted property owners, a team of South Island based volunteers will undertake bushfire relief in the form of debris clearance and removal on their behalf. Ōtūmatua is considered a wāhi tapu (sacred place) and is located on a hilltop in the area in which we will be operating. It was traditionally used as a location to forecast the weather - highly relevant given the role that weather plays in increasing the danger of bushfires. We have a small number of spots still available for South Island volunteers. For more information or to submit an Expression of Interest to deploy, head to this link: https://lnkd.in/gtqcB3Yt New to TFK? There's still time to join before this operation begins. Follow this link to register with us and we will be in touch with next steps: https://lnkd.in/gpAwSeQk #tfkiwi #disasterreadiness #disasterresponse #disasterrelief #disasterrecovery #volunteers #volunteering

Attention heirs' property practitioners, including lawyers, nonprofit and community development advocates, and cooperative extension agents! The Farmland Access Legal Toolkit provides resources and information on heirs’ property to help prevent land loss and support family farmers. Learn more about the state laws addressing heirs’ property with our newly updated fact sheets on many Southern states. More states coming soon. https://lnkd.in/eWZSQRc4 Heirs’ property is property transferred to multiple family members through inheritance without a will or estate plan. When land is owned together by multiple family members without a clear title, it leads to multiple challenges. Heirs’ property is a significant driver of African American land loss in the United States. #farmland #heirsproperty #inheritance

SATURDAY MORNING (JULY 27TH) at 9:30 AM our amazing Who I Am Foundation volunteers in #Albuquerque will be having our next Community Clean-Up (ABQ)! For this Community Clean-Up our volunteers will be meeting up at and cleaning Tingley Beach. Located at 1800 Tingley Dr SW, Albuquerque, NM 87104 NO OPEN-TOED SHOES Cleaning up loose trash is one of the best ways to pitch in for your community and the environment. Volunteering as a means to help conserve and protect the environment has a lot of upsides. Of course, the first is that you’ll be taking care of our planet, and it badly needs a little love given the myriad ways in which we’ve become adept at destroying it. But beyond that, volunteering for a cause you care about is a great way to meet like-minded people, make friends, and pull yourself out of the blues that sometimes accompany caring a lot about something important – especially if you feel alone in your endeavors. None of us like the sight of litter. Litter spoils the look of where we live but that’s not the only reason for picking up litter. There are a number of benefits from picking up litter that you may not have considered before. Volunteer-led projects such as these are one of the quickest, simplest, and least expensive ways to inspire more community spirit and civic action. A visually appealing community increases property values, attracts businesses, and improves the neighborhood's image. Beauty is one of the three most influential factors in community attachment, which means loyalty, to your particular town or city. Some research even shows that a nice-looking neighborhood promotes good behavior. Join us in keeping your community clean! For more information: https://lnkd.in/gFCcUaf5 #TeamWhoIAm_Albuquerque

How do property rights shape environmental outcomes in your community? To protect the earth, we have to understand who owns it. Here I trace the migration of a highly endangered bird, the cerulean warbler, as it flies from the Peruvian Amazon to North America. I researched the property rights arrangements in each spot where it lands to provide a sense of the challenges and opportunities along the way. (This free chapter is from my book Who Rules the Earth? Happy to provide other chapters for free per request; this is a nonprofit publication.) https://bit.ly/whorulesch4
