Literacy is a fundamental human right - and a crucial building block of the foundations of a successful and happy life. 📚 The impact of low literacy on life chances, mental health and wellbeing and #socialmobility is profound. Not only does it impede access to basic engagement in society - the ability to understand a job advert, payslip, news report or doctor's letter - but it impacts ability to access the lifelong benefits of reading for pleasure. This year, #InternationalLiteracyDay's theme is "Promoting multilingual education: Literacy for mutual understanding and peace". We believe all children and young people deserve the chance to get to know themselves and others through the power of connecting with - and through - the written word. In an increasingly tech-driven environment, human connections and relationships will be more important than ever. Literacy is vital to academic engagement and ability to participate. It promotes compassion and empathy; and supports positive life experiences and outcomes. It gets young people ready for the diverse and ever-changing world they'll need to thrive in. 📝📙📖 #celebrateliteracy #literacyforall

The 'Matthew Effect' highlights how advantages in wealth, popularity, or resources tend to snowball, creating a widening gap between those who 'have' and those who 'do not.' This principle is applicable not only to economic or social success but also to literacy and education. More importantly, children who have early access to books and learning resources are likely to thrive academically and socially, while those without these opportunities struggle to catch up and fall behind. At any given time, there are around 80,000 people in custody in England and Wales. Around two-thirds of them have the literacy skills expected of an 11-year-old. Today on #InternationalLiteracyDay, address this imbalance, promoting literacy as a key to breaking the cycle and empowering future generations to flourish in an increasingly interconnected world. #MatthewEffect #SocialMobility #EducationForAll #everybookmatters #everychildmatters
