So here is the second instalment from my 2023 San Diego presentation. If you are to truly understand others you need to look beyond the behaviours that you see on the surface and discover their “reason why”. You could have 7 people behaving, pretty much, in the same way, but they could have 7 different individual reasons why and none of those might be the same as your reason for behaving in that way. Care enough about others and your relationship with them to spend time getting to know them and to understand “their reason why”. Care enough about yourself by being willing to let them see you. Care enough about the relationships to co-create a future built on openness, transparency, understanding and trust. Ask questions to be genuinely curious and listen with the intent to understand and learn. “I care enough about you to want to hear what you have to say”. #corestrengths #cruciallearning #SDI2.0

I'm impressed with the risks these school leaders and teachers took to rethink their grading practices. They learned together, learned from others in the pilot, and dove into the work knowing they wanted their students to experience something different. So often grading is an area that each teacher comes to on their own without the opportunity to think with others about the purpose of a grade. Many of the schools are defining grades as a communication tool between teachers and students that helps measure students' understanding of the content in each course.
