“If there are two things that Americans are afraid of, it's being old and death. Those are two things that we don't talk about in any context. I mean, you put them both in one conversation and that is a conversation we are not going to have,” says psychotherapist Bianca O'Connor McDermott, LPC. OC87 Recovery Diaries is ready to have this conversation. To that end, we are creating a series that examines the difficult topic of suicide among older adults. Case Studies: A Conversation about Older Adult Suicide features commentary from mental health professionals and case studies used by mental health professionals to promote awareness about this significant public health issue. If you or someone you know may be in crisis or considering suicide, please call, text, or chat the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline at 988. Today is #WorldMentalHealthDay, and this year’s theme is Workplace Mental Health—a cause that’s deeply personal to me. For years, I struggled with my mental health. In February 2023, I hit a crisis point where I was ready to take my own life. Thankfully, I found the support I needed through James' Place Charity, which helped me on the first steps towards recovery. I recently did an interview with them to share my experience, what it felt like to be in a mental health crisis, and how they helped me through that time. But my recovery wasn’t just due to James’ Place. A huge part of it was the incredible empathy and support I received from the team at Cyted Health. The workplace plays a critical role in mental health—after all, most of us spend nearly 50% of our waking hours at work, alongside our colleagues. That's a massive part of our lives, which makes creating a safe, open, and supportive environment at work essential. On #WorldMentalHealthDay, there are often discussions about special initiatives to support employees’ mental well-being. While these efforts are fantastic, I believe the most impactful thing businesses can do is simpler: Create an open, empathetic work culture where people feel safe talking about their struggles. Real change starts with honest conversations. When people feel comfortable speaking up, we can address challenges head-on and work toward real solutions. So, my call to action today is this: If you’re a leader, make a commitment to be there for your team—not just through policies or programs but through your actions. Take the time to listen. Be open, be empathetic, and encourage conversations that matter. You don’t need a big initiative to make a difference—you just need to be present and care.
For #WorldMentalHealthDay we asked Jack, who came to James’ Place for help last year, what it felt like to be in a suicidal crisis. Thank you Jack for sharing your story 💙 https://lnkd.in/e3AiC9MF For more info on the free, life-saving therapy James’ Place offers suicidal men visit jamesplace.org.uk #suicide #suicideprevention
