A RAND study finds curriculum restrictions are having an effect even on educators in states without limits on instruction. The 65% of teachers nationwide deciding to limit instruction as of 2023 is nearly double the share of teachers in states that have enacted restrictive policies. As of January 2023, 18 states had passed policies restricting teachers’ instruction, according to RAND’s findings from the 2023 State of the American Teacher Survey. In the year since, another 2 states have passed such policies, said Ashley Woo, assistant policy researcher at RAND. #curriculum #teachers

The report delves into U.S. public school teachers' perceptions of students' difficulties with reading in grades 3–8, their knowledge about how students learn to read, experiences supporting these readers, and what they need to help students become proficient readers. Despite the growing body of research on older readers, few studies consider whether U.S. teachers can identify students who have difficulty reading instructional materials across content areas or whether teachers feel like they have the knowledge and resources to support those students. The findings highlight the importance of including upper elementary and middle school teachers in resource development and offer guidance to policymakers designing or implementing reading instruction reforms. We need to support our teachers in so many ways, there is no denying. But how do we support the critical necessity of education when the world is facing a shortage of 31 million+ secondary school teachers. Including elementary school teachers, it’s a total deficit of 44 million teachers. How can we overcome this massive gap? Let’s start with the teachers we have today. Teachers deserve more respect, more flexibility, and the 🐘 in the room, more money. More funding for programs, more money for resources, more money to hire more support, more teachers, and higher salaries.
