I have spent the past few days taking care of my mother and running her to different tests and procedures. Being a caregiver for both aging parents and children simultaneously is one of the toughest roles I've ever taken on. Balancing the needs of my kids while ensuring my parents receive the care they deserve is a daily juggling act. Did you know that nearly 47% of adults in their 40s and 50s are in the same situation, supporting both kids and aging parents? It's not just about time—many parents with kids under 18 also care for elderly parents, dedicating over 20 hours a week and approximately $7,000 annually out of pocket. Today - 4.16.2024 - is National Healthcare Decisions Day. A day for recognizing & promoting the importance of discussions about advance planning/advance directives/end of life decisions. Did you know that youth in foster care nearing age 18 must be informed of, & provided resources related to, naming someone to carry out/make healthcare decisions for them if they became unable to speak for themselves? Most people don’t think about advance directives, Healthcare Power of Attorney (HCPOA) or end of life when thinking of young adults - not a fun or easy topic! However, accidents or illnesses happen sometimes & not everyone has a next of kin they would want to make healthcare decisions if they could not. Such an important topic.
