Amid rising costs and a tumultuous job market, Millennials are facing another issue when it comes to their careers and personal lives. According to CBS News, #caregiving presents unique challenges for Millennials who fall under the ‘sandwich’ category of being both parents and the children of #aging parents. Often, Millennials must fill a #caregiving role for multiple individuals in their lives, therefore they must be aware of the resources available to them. Boomers prefer to err on the side of independence when it comes to #AssistedLiving. But how do their Millennial #caregivers support them in these decisions without compromising #health and #safety? The #homecare imperative is essential to answering this question. A new approach to life after 60 requires new practices in #healthcare. Programs like the New York Consumer Directed Personal Assistance Program (#CDPAP) offer assistance to caregivers of all ages but may be useful to Millennials in particular as they navigate the preferences of their parents. Assistance programs like the CDPAP allow for #family members and even friends to care for their loved ones while receiving payment for their work, causing older adult patients to lead safer, more comfortable, and independent lives within the cherished environments of their own homes. Absolutely loving this opinion piece by Dr. Molly Dickens, PhD and Dr. Lucy Hutner, MD. in the The New York Times. "It is well documented that stress wreaks havoc on our health. Decades of research have linked chronic stress to increased long-term risks for heart disease, diabetes and autoimmune disorders. Stress is also a key component underlying the onset and maintenance of mental illness." "We also expect that the American work force at large will begin to see not only increased absenteeism related to caregiving responsibilities but also mental health issues and burnout related to child care gaps, a consequence well documented for farm families, health care workers and other professions." Wow. Yes. We agree! That's why we think it's imperative Congress makes it easier for parents and caregivers to balance work and family, and that Congress comes together in a bipartisan way to pass legislation that invests robustly in child care. Only with robust and lasting federal funding for child care, can Congress meet the needs of today's families. #workingparents #caregivers #workingmoms #workfamilybalance #worklifebalance #policy #childcare #federalfunding #stress #mentalhealth #maternalmentalhealth #healthyliving #workforce https://lnkd.in/g29zDPXk

I have spent the past few days taking care of my mother and running her to different tests and procedures. Being a caregiver for both aging parents and children simultaneously is one of the toughest roles I've ever taken on. Balancing the needs of my kids while ensuring my parents receive the care they deserve is a daily juggling act. Did you know that nearly 47% of adults in their 40s and 50s are in the same situation, supporting both kids and aging parents? It's not just about time—many parents with kids under 18 also care for elderly parents, dedicating over 20 hours a week and approximately $7,000 annually out of pocket. It's challenging, but finding others facing similar struggles provides a sense of solidarity. More support is crucial, whether through flexible work schedules, affordable eldercare services, or community resources. If you're in a similar position, remember you're not alone. Let's come together, share our stories, and offer each other support. #SandwichGeneration #CaregiverLife #AgingParents #ParentingChallenges #FamilySupport #ElderCare #ChildCare #WorkLifeBalance #MentalHealthMatters #FinancialImpact #CommunitySupport #FlexibleWork #CaregivingResources

Today - 4.16.2024 - is National Healthcare Decisions Day. A day for recognizing & promoting the importance of discussions about advance planning/advance directives/end of life decisions. Did you know that youth in foster care nearing age 18 must be informed of, & provided resources related to, naming someone to carry out/make healthcare decisions for them if they became unable to speak for themselves? Most people don’t think about advance directives, Healthcare Power of Attorney (HCPOA) or end of life when thinking of young adults - not a fun or easy topic! However, accidents or illnesses happen sometimes & not everyone has a next of kin they would want to make healthcare decisions if they could not. Such an important topic. Here are some resources to help start or continue the discussion with older youth in foster care or young adults formerly in care - also really useful for ourselves & our loved ones!
