The front end of design is where you go wide. Dream of the product that can do anything. This blog by Lucas Wade offers some good insight into the discipline and benefit of a focused design. It is great when as an engineer you can get out in the field with sales or visit a key opinion leader with a User Experience expert and help turn the VOC into elegant technical solutions. Even getting to a trade show or conference is a good way to see what gives traction to competitor designs with customers.

Why do I still need to keep product designer after the product has been launched? Think of it like this: just because you've built a house doesn't mean you stop caring about how it looks and functions. Product design is like ongoing renovations to make sure your house stays modern, comfortable, and attractive to visitors. The world doesn't stand still, and neither should your product. Trends change, technology evolves, and your users' needs shift over time. Product design helps you keep up with these changes, ensuring your product stays relevant and competitive. Plus, let's face it – nobody likes a house with leaky faucets or creaky floors. Similarly, product design involves fixing any glitches, optimizing performance, and fine-tuning existing features to keep your users happy and satisfied. Ultimately, product design post-launch is about staying proactive, keeping your product fresh, and continuing to delight your users long after the initial excitement of launch day.

🚽 The Power of Nudge Theory: Lessons from the Urinal Fly at Schiphol Airport ✈️ In an age of increasing distraction and choice, its very easy to overlook simple solutions and ignore even the most obvious signals or behaviours. However, thoughtful design is applied in even the most ordinary of scenarios can yield epic results! In an effort to keep their bathrooms cleaner, Schiphol Airport introduced a tiny, simple change: they placed a small fly decal in each urinal. The idea? Give men something to aim at. And guess what? It worked wonders! This tiny fly led to an incredible 80% reduction in spillage and, as a result, an 8% cost reduction in cleaning expenses. This is an example of nudge theory in action. Nudge theory, made famous by Richard Thaler and Cass Sunstein, focuses on how subtle changes in design can significantly influence behaviour. Here’s why the urinal fly is such a powerful nudge: • Intuitive Design: No instructions needed – it’s instinctual. • Cost-Effective: A tiny investment with huge savings. • Concrete Results: Significant improvements in cleanliness and cost efficiency. While this might be more familiar to those who’ve seen men’s restrooms, the principle applies universally: simple, well-thought-out design changes can lead to substantial results. Think about it – what small, intuitive adjustments could we make in our workplaces, products, or daily routines to drive better outcomes? The urinal fly teaches us that: • Small Changes, Big Impacts: Sometimes the tiniest tweaks lead to the biggest improvements. • Design for Behaviour: Understand human tendencies and design accordingly. • Measure Success: Always look for ways to quantify the impact of your changes.
