It's taken some time to come to the moment where I felt ready to share this news, but I am honored to announce my selection for the U.S. Army Sergeants Major Academy. I recognize that this isn't just a personal achievement; it's a profound responsibility not just in terms of the school, but with respect to the path it puts me on and the weight of the promotion and its inherent responsibilities if I were selected to be a Command Sergeant Major. However, this was unexpected and frankly surprising. After fighting to no avail to get my records updated for the last order of merit review and my subsequent low placement in those rankings, I had taken that as a sign and encouragment to move on with my non-military life. This year's ranking was such a significant departure from last that this is all unexpected. It's all a jolting reminder of the unpredictable nature of Army (Reserve) life. In all of life, paths often take unforeseen turns—some that challenge us, and others that present new horizons... sometimes both. While I'm grateful for this recognition, it also means setting aside and in some cases completely altering my personal (& family), academic, and professional plans and goals. Despite the way in which it transpired, I recognize that it's important to adapt and embrace challenges. I choose to view this as an opportunity to further grow and learn. It's a chance to deepen my commitment to serving and to uphold the values and standards of the Army—and my own—with greater dedication. As I step into this new chapter, I carry with me the support, encouragement, and trust of many. I am incredibly grateful and appreciative to the leaders who advocated for me and helped mentor me to get here, and especially who support me no matter my decisions. And to those who have believed in me even when our visions diverged, your faith in my capabilities, even if it clashed with my personal desires, shows your commitment to what's best for the Army – and I respect that. Here's to embracing the unexpected, adapting with resilience, and several more years of unexpected Army service. *This is for the academy selection. 📣 Meet Robert Montes, Financial Advisor and CPFA at Link Financial Advisory! 📈 Hey everyone! 👋 I’m Robert Montes, one of the managing partners at Link Financial Advisory. With over 15 years of experience, I’ve helped countless clients navigate the complex world of personal finance. But here’s something you might not know about me: from 2012 to 2016, I took a break from the financial advising world to serve in the US Army. During that time, I was stationed at Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM) with the 2nd Ranger Battalion. As an infantryman, I wore many hats—serving in a Ranger Infantry Platoon and also on a Ranger Reconnaissance Team as a grenadier. People ask from time to time what the Ranger Regiment is like. There's two things I tell them: 1. You have to earn your spot everyday - there are no free lunches and everyone is just renting space in Battalion. 2. Don't be surprised by the level of aggression you find in your typical Ranger - Living in Battalion reminds me of putting a bunch of angry dogs around each other, all of which are highly trained and bread to destroy things, and then telling them they have to play nice with one another until they're sent out to do their job. Needless to say, things can definitely get heated and aren't what you find in your typical office environment 😆 My most impactful experience? Deploying to Afghanistan with the Regiment. Our unit focused on capture/kill missions of High-Value Targets in the Global War on Terror. It was intense, challenging, and taught me invaluable lessons about teamwork, leadership, and resilience. I’m incredibly grateful for my time in the Ranger Regiment as it helped shaped me into the person I am today. 🎖️ Embracing the Transition: From Military Service to Civilian Life 🏢 As I prepare to embark on the next chapter of my journey, I find myself reflecting on the incredible experiences and invaluable lessons learned during my time in the forces. Transitioning from military service to civilian life can undoubtedly be a daunting prospect, but it's a challenge I am ready to embrace wholeheartedly. Throughout my military career, I have honed essential skills such as leadership, adaptability, and resilience, which I am eager to leverage in civilian roles. While the transition may present its unique set of challenges, I am confident in my ability to navigate them with determination and a steadfast commitment to success. One aspect of civilian life that particularly excites me is the opportunity for continuous growth and learning. I am eager to explore new industries and develop new skill sets. Moreover, I am grateful for the unwavering support network that has been instrumental in facilitating this transition. From fellow veterans to mentors and civilian professionals, their guidance and encouragement have been invaluable as I prepare to take this next step. Mentorship- really just giving back- is one of the most impactful ways we can assist our transitioning Rangers and veterans. A TRF mentor is a veteran, or good friend, of the 75th Ranger Regiment who also has had other life experiences outside the military, with a willingness to help build connections, share experiences, and assist in setting realistic expectations. A mentor can provide the guidance similar to what you got from your 1st and 2nd line supervisors, but on how to succeed in the environment outside the Regiment. Mentors are from a variety of industries that provide experience and advice on life experiences, education, setting you one for success and with their network. Few transitioning veterans have a set career path upon leaving the military but do have a desire to find job satisfaction and worthwhile work similar to the life they had in Regiment. Eighty percent of opportunities come from recommendations! Just like Regiment, this is an all-volunteer organization.
