The term “leader” is unique to me because you can define it in so many ways. For me, LTC Hardy O. Johnson’s passion and genuine love for his Soldiers is what makes him the epitome of who a U.S. Military Officer should be. LTC Johnson can walk into any Company, step into any office - and he’ll know every Soldiers’ name and story. He’ll run into any Soldier and ask for updates on how their family and friends are doing - starting off with the previous conversation they had. Regardless of what he was doing, he always let Soldiers know that it never mattered how far he came, he knew why he was in. He’s a walking example what I always remind my Soldiers - your rank and position doesn’t matter until your Soldiers and leaders know you care about them and acknowledge who they are. Until you put that genuine time and effort into your team, they’ll never care if you fail and what will happen if their task isn’t completed. Until they know who you really are as a person, they’ll never understand the ramifications and impact their performance can have on your own perception from a higher up level. That’s when your team will work hard to make sure you don’t fail, not to check the box. He’s my brother for life. I’ll miss meeting up to play basketball, stopping in to talk sports, and those long talks about life. At Quest Defense, we stand strong in our appreciation for the armed forces. We believe that there are many things you can learn as a military officer that translate perfectly into the civilian world. In this piece, Brig. Gen. David Elwell talks about his experience in the Army and how it has positively impacted his personal and professional life. Elwell says that some of the most important skills he learned in the Army are communication and collaboration. “The leader has to know how to communicate the mission and then merge the team together... If your team does not gel, or if you don’t have the right people in the right seats, you have to address it immediately." I have been given the lion's share of great #leaders during my Army career. So many people have been dedicated to my #professionaldevelopment, passing some powerful insights onto me along the way. What makes these insights truly noteworthy, however, is their applicability to both the #military and #business. Here are a few of my top lessons learned. From Col. Anthony Keller (Commander, 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, U.S. Army): • The Power of the Backbrief is Powerful: Give junior leaders unreasonably short suspenses to come back and brief you on progress made. Doing so allows a leader to gauge progress early without wasting #organizationalenergy. • Junior Leader Autonomy: When in charge of highly-talented or specialized individuals, give them the autonomy to perform. A thoroughbred needs space to run; your job as the leader is ensure they have that freedom and to simply ask, "What do you need from me?" From Col. Charcillea A. Schaefer (Commander, 16th Military Police Brigade, XVIII Airborne Corps): • Organizational Change: A leader's sphere of influence is always 2 levels down from his or her current level of responsibility. To affect true #organizationalchange, you need to win over the hearts and minds of at least 70% of the population within your sphere of influence. • Leader Presence: People notice when a leader is present AND when he or she is not. You must be an #engaged leader to (1) Observe how junior leaders perform under pressure, and (2) Provide constructive feedback for both individual and #organizationalgrowth.

Thanks, US Veterans Magazine! They recently asked me to contribute some thoughts about the benefits of hiring veterans. There's already been so much written on this topic (even by me!). It usually goes something like this: "Veterans have perseverance and ingenuity!" But an often overlooked skill is the veteran's ability to function on diverse teams. My military service helped me understand how to work on diverse teams, but maybe not in the way you'd think... "Slavery was beneficial for Black people." That's what my roommate said straight to my face late one night in my initial military intelligence training. Read this article to see how the situation resolved.
