As 2023 draws to an end, I am starting look back back over the past year and look to the challenges and opportunities for 2024. Of course, the festive season is a time to relax and enjoy time with friends and family but it also gives a pause in the normal day-to-day activity, which enables you to reflect on the past, and consider the future. The next three weeks will be spent emptying inboxes, tidying up files. reflecting on the past and thinking about what I want to focus on over the next 12 months. I am not a great one for New Years resolutions, but a few carefully chosen objectives might be in order. Let the reflecting/thinking begin.

Holiday hot take: Your CEO doesn’t need to do a holiday message. 🫢 Listen, I love it when they do (and they do it right). I’m here for some holiday shenanigans in front of a tree, or a video recap of the year’s accomplishments. I’m also good with passing in favor of getting more work done, taking more time off, or focusing on other priorities. Hard truth: Most employees are not waiting with bated breath to see what the big boss’s end-of-year video will say. In fact, they may not watch it when you do. You know when they WILL care? When they are featured in the piece. When you engage with front-line staff to tell the story. When you name people and departments who have had exceptional accomplishments in the past year. When it’s not just about the C-Suite. I see a lot of holiday messages that are just ego boosts for the execs. Think Quick: When Was the Last Time You Made a Resolution Outside of New Year's? 🌟 As we enter another year, I've pondered a common tradition: New Year's resolutions. It struck me that these resolutions might be more a result of the holiday downtime than a sudden surge of self-improvement desire. Most of the year, we're too swamped for deep reflection. Come the holidays, we suddenly have time to think about our goals. 💭 This brings up a thought: Wouldn't regular reflection throughout the year lead to more meaningful, gradual improvements rather than just annual pledges? 🌱 What's your take on this? Do you think New Year’s resolutions are mostly a product of the extra free time we find during the holidays? Or is there more to this tradition?
