Germany's Changing Memoryscape: Postsocialist, Postmigrant and Postcolonial Dynamics I am very pleased that this super and very timely special issue of the Berliner Blätter has just been published, free open access: https://lnkd.in/eqybWcuw Germany’s memoryscape is transforming. Long structured by a focus on the Nazi past and the Holocaust, in which other memories tended to be marginalized out of concern that they might relativize this terrible history, it is increasingly incorporating – and being changed by – other strands of collective remembrance. In particular, Germany’s socialist and colonial pasts, and its multiple histories of migration are gaining significant public presence. How do these mnemonic impulses come together and interact? What are the implications for the dynamics of public remembering? Drawing on ethnographic and other original research, this issue provides new insights into the ongoing transformation. Contents: Postsocialist, Postmigrant, and Postcolonial Dynamics in Germany’s Changing Memoryscape. Introduction – Andrei Zavadski, Sharon Macdonald & Irene Hilden On the Sidelines. New Publication: The German-Israeli Relationship: A Chronicle of Four Decades, 1983-2023 On the occasion of the 40th anniversary of AGI, the Society, Culture, and Politics program is pleased to present Dr. Lily Gardner Feldman’s policy brief devoted to understanding four decades of relations between Israel and Germany. Few countries have such a complicated and intertwined historical relationship and even fewer countries are as important to each other in the present. Grasping the historical evolution—the triumphs and tensions—of this special relationship are vital to understanding both countries, the larger regions in which they are embedded, and much of the international architecture of the contemporary world. Abstract: The article argues that historians might usefully contribute to public debates about forced migration by engaging critically with public memories and histories, highlighting dead ends of the past, and acting as champions of the losers of history. Drawing on German-language newspaper reports from February and March 2022 about refugees from Ukraine, the article demonstrates how attempts to make sense of the present tend to put forward particular interpretations of the past, and suggests that historians are well positioned to draw critical attention to such uses and abuses of history. Recounting the trajectory of the right to asylum envisaged by the architects of the 1948 Universal Declaration, the article advocates a strictly non-Whiggish history-writing that privileges the paths not taken in the past. Finally, the article introduces Jules Michelet ’s ideas about the historian as magistrate. https://lnkd.in/d92H3aPi

The role of women in defeating Nazi-fascism and shaping a new Europe existed and was important. Yet, not everyone knows about it. Conventional history remembers Ada Rossi and Ursula Hirschmann mainly as wives, married to the authors of the Ventotene Manifesto, Ernesto Rossi and Altiero Spinelli. But the story of one of the foundational texts of the European Union is not only one of men. While their husbands were held captive by the Fascist regime on the island of Ventotene, Ada Rossi and Ursula Hirschmann, free to travel, were the ones who brought the Manifesto to the Italian mainland. Their most significant contribution to the anti-fascist and federalist cause was centred on distribution, acting as connecting officers, like postal workers, or, as the Communists called them, 'flamingos.' Nevertheless, both actively participated in the exchange of ideas. "Women’s political commitment and the history of federalist movements are intertwined with personal lives, friendships, passions, and love stories," writes Antonia Ferri. Read "The Women of Ventotene" to uncover the connection between the personal lives and political involvement of Europe’s “female founders”. Delve into how their romantic relationships unveil a human side to the anti-fascist political movements of the postwar period that go beyond gossip. Journalists, and media and cultural industry workers: On Monday, Berlin's culture committee will discuss implementing a CDU/SPD proposal that would compel artists and institutions to sign a declaration adhering to the IHRA definition of antisemitism as a precondition for receiving state funding. Artists/culture industry are collecting signatures to oppose this measure, which you can sign here: https://lnkd.in/d94bfcsD The IHRA definition is highly problematic, presenting constitutional challenges to fundamental rights. It is hardly the last word on "antisemitism"; in some regards, IHRA fuels it. Berlin's proposal would, among other things, require state-funded artists and institutions to uphold IHRA's view and ensure that funding "does not benefit any organizations that are classified as terrorist and/or extremist." Chair of Economic Geography @University of Bayreuth and Co-Director Institute of African Studies (University of Bayreuth)
Important perspective by Historian Jürgen Zimmerer: "But when the justified and necessary fight against anti-Semitism is misused to propagate ethno-nationalist ideas, this makes a mockery of all the lessons learned from the Third Reich, and ultimately undermines the fight against anti-Semitism as well." .."I'm really calling on people to take seriously the universal lessons from the history of violence, the universality of human rights, everywhere in the world and for all people: it is wrong to torture people, it is wrong to take people hostage, it is wrong to rape people and wrong to murder them. Everywhere, no matter who is doing it! Human dignity is inviolable, that's what it says in the German constitution! We cannot play off one group against another, or prioritise one over another, whatever our motives might be. In the face of global tensions and the challenges of climate change, this is becoming ever more important" https://lnkd.in/eds5XdvC

Director & Founder @ Inclusive Peace | Public Speaker | Critical Thinker | Peace Processes, Peacebuilding & Mediation | Inclusive Dialogue | Inclusion
A warm and wintery ❄️ thank you 🙏🏾 to University of Lucerne and Ethos Foundation (Switzerland), where last week, I had the honor of exploring the state of #peacebuiding in a world of chaos and the new, creative, and courageous paths towards a world with fewer #conflicts. Here is a brief recap of the talk (posted in full length) I start by highlighting 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘅𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: The world is currently experiencing the highest number of armed conflicts since World War II, with conflicts not only increasing (55 armed conflicts worldwide) but also lasting longer, averaging 11 years compared to five years ago. The return of war to Europe (Russian aggression against Ukraine), coupled with a novel nuclear threat, military coups in West Africa, the rise of authoritarian regimes (such as in Afghanistan or Myanmar), and a global shift to the right further deepen the complexity of the situation. In this precarious and complex global situation, 𝗜 𝗼𝗯𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝗴𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘀𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗲𝘀. The UN Security Council is blocked and functions worse as the supreme body for stabilizing world peace than during the Cold War. While traditional mediators like the UN, Norway, or even Switzerland are losing significance, negotiations today are increasingly conducted by countries themselves or by entities like Qatar (hosting the Israel-Hamas hostage agreement) or Turkey (Ukraine grain deal), among others. WHAT IS NEEDED? New alliances and more creativity are needed. 𝗔 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗮 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘁𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗶𝘁 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗯𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗲. Western peace promotion often still follows old patterns with deeply colonial behaviors and these old patterns need to be broken. Especially in the West, more humility is needed. WHAT CAN SWITZERLAND DO? Switzerland needs to reconsider its peace promotion, work more realistically, and see the world as it is. 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲 𝗮 𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗳𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝘄𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗴𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗻𝗲𝗴𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝗺𝗮𝘆 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗹 𝘁𝗼 𝘂𝘀. This requires a willingness for difficult discussions, connecting events abroad with what is happening at home. WHAT CAN RELIGIOUS ACTORS DO? In the talk, I also highlight the role and contribution of religious actors, whose significant advantage lies in international networking and the exchange of knowledge and experiences. 𝗥𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗮𝘀 𝗮𝗻 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗹𝘂𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘀𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀, 𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗲-𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘁-𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹. German speakers 👀 👇🏾 https://lnkd.in/eak-nmW8
