The #Japanese government published a draft Article 6.2 methodology for issuing carbon credits from projects that improve water management and cut #GreenhouseGasEmissions in Philippine rice paddy fields, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries said in a statement June 28, marking the first step toward extending Japan's Article 6.2 mechanism into the agriculture sector. Article 6.2 is an UN-backed mechanism that allows two countries to sign bilateral agreements to transfer emission mitigation outcomes across national boundaries. Countries can either choose existing methodologies in the international voluntary carbon market or design new, tailormade methodologies under their bilateral programs. I participated at the WWF 2024 in Balì in an interesting session on governance and national and international regulatory frameworks co-organized by FAO. Looking at laws and policies can be helpful to get a better understanding of the multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary aspects of the water sector and cycle. Looking at aqualex.fao.org, shows you how many non-water specific laws and policies, like, amongst other things, about forestry, aquaculture, environment, biodiversity, climate and mining have something to say about water. Aqualex can be a helpful guide in the labyrinth of IWRM.

The 2024 Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment was held on 16/17 September. One of the most significant challenges highlighted is the impending impact of the Kigali Amendment. This international treaty aims to phase down hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), which are widely used as refrigerants. This change will affect every sector within the cold chain, pushing companies to adapt quickly to new regulations before the end of the year. The urgency to pivot towards environmentally friendly refrigerants is paramount, yet many industry players appear reluctant to initiate new projects due to uncertainty about compliance and implementation.

It is time for us to see forests for more than their capacity to store carbon. They are also important for food security when they regulate water cycles, the local climate, and promote healthier work conditions for rural workers. I am very excited that in a couple of weeks I will be in Rome for the 27th Session of the FAO Committee on Forestry (COFO 27), where we will discuss the links between forests, water, and climate - and how they are vital for resilient and prosperous agriculture https://lnkd.in/drb22Gea

According to the Government Gazette notice concerned, the latest iteration reflects some comments on a draft released in March 2023 for public comment. Once in force, the regulations are expected to go some way towards: * managing the release of mercury into the environment, and * reducing anthropogenic mercury emissions resulting from industrial and manufacturing processes. They will also provide for: * the phasing out of ‘mercury added products’ * the phasing down the use of dental amalgam, and * regulate mercury storage facilities.
