I had a really hard time intuiting why #LLMs appear so intelligent when all they do is predict tokens based on the statistical regularities of natural language. After all, patterns in language themselves do not have inherent intelligence. What helped me build a better intuition (not sure if it's the right one) was the insight about what the training data actually contains: Humanities thoughts, together with the reasoning as to how we arrived at these thoughts (i.e. the thought processes). So if we train machines to predict texts well, we're training them to reason and produce coherent thoughts -- the underpinnings of intelligence. Said another way, if you can predict the output of intelligent beings, you produced intelligence. This is also why I think the focus from Causal folks on LLMs being predictors and hence not really causal is misguided. We can certainly train a machine to think causally by producing (predicting) a causal reasoning process.
