Meet Brandon! Brandon has been at NW Works for two years, serving as the Productions Supervisor in NW Works’ warehouse. Being able to help adults with disabilities progress through skill building and increase their confidence to secure a job in the community is what led Brandon to NW Works. Brandon’s favorite part of his job is the community he’s created with his associates. As Production Supervisor, Brandon oversees individuals who might not have made connections if it weren’t for their occupation. Folks in the warehouse check in, develop friendships, share meals, and become a community that compliments each other to create an excellent group of workers. Community and progress are two values that Brandon mentioned many times as an important and satisfying piece of his job. These items overlap in Brandon’s role when the people NW Works serves express an interest in warehouse work. Tasks can include labeling paint cans and assembling screw kits. As with any job, individuals may come in with doubts or low confidence on their ability to do tasks. A highlight of Brandon’s job is watching these doubts transform into skill development and confidence building. I was asked the other day on how I determine who I hire for these positions. This was my response: In the warehouse industry hiring for positions like forklift drivers, etc. I feel a sit-down interview is not 100% the way to go. If you are applying In the warehouse industry, when hiring for positions such as sanitation, forklift drivers, etc., I believe that a traditional sit-down interview may not be the best approach. If you're applying for a forklift driver position, I want to see you in action. That's why, instead of a traditional interview (where I already have your application with all your information), I conduct a hands-on test involving moving pallets and cartons. Here are some of the things I look at during these tests: 1. Confidence - I observe your demeanor and look for signs of nervousness. If you aren't confident in your ability to operate a forklift, it's hard for me to have confidence in you. 2. Proficiency - I assess how well you handle the controls. Can you operate them without constantly looking down at your hands? 3. Safety awareness - I check if you demonstrate basic safety practices, such as honking the horn when reversing and wearing your seatbelt.to drive a forklift I want to see you in action. This is why Instead of the interview ( I have your application with all your info on it) I am doing a test. Moving pallets and cartons.
