Things I do as a photo director that most people don't know about 👇 15 years ago, I had zero clue about the different kinds of roles I could apply to in this industry. But eventually after a lot of trial and error, I found a couple of them well-suited for my lifestyle and creative needs. And the Photo Director is one of them. If you are curious about what this job entails, here are 7 things I am responsible for: 1. Creative brainstorming: Diving into trends, research, and pitch concepts that will amaze and captivate. 2. Logistical coordination: Juggling tasks like location scouting, securing permits, organizing props and equipment, and creating the shooting schedule. 3. Art direction: On the day of the shoot, you guide the photographer and the team to ensure every shot aligns perfectly with the creative concept. 4. Talent casting: Reviewing portfolios, conducting auditions, and carefully selecting the perfect models to bring the vision to life. 5. Post-production oversight: You make sure the final images meet the desired standards and vision, ensuring any necessary retouching is handled appropriately. 6. Budget management: Keeping a watchful eye on expenses, negotiating rates, and ensuring the project stays within budget. 7. Collaboration and communication: Bringing together a team of stylists, makeup artists, set designers, and editors, coordinating their efforts, and ensuring everyone is on the same page. What makes an art director hire a particular photographer? Check out the concise post by Karen Williams below. IMO, having the soft skills and business side of photography nailed down is often unknown or ignored by many trying to make it in photography, from what I’ve experienced. I see it now with younger photogs, particularly on social media, where rapid content creation is their goal. It’s like fast fashion but with images. Volume over quality ends up commoditizing your work, demanding lower prices and a higher workload. Being able to work with the art team on how the images will be used in the layout, carrying adequate insurance/riders for a shoot, meeting deadlines, the list goes on…. Your body of work will reflect all the attention (or lack thereof) you pay to the ancillary skills involved in this craft. I know there’s been times where I may not have had the most creative portfolio, but I still got the job based on communication, reputation and being able to work with tight deadlines for a specific layout.

There are standard, time-friendly corporate head shots and then there are crafted, business portraits for professionals. There are stock corporate and storytelling photos in abundance but these can never show the true, authentic persona of the company that customers and clients expect. Right now I’m hearing from many clients that every marketing and PR endeavour in pursuit of visibilty feels like being stuck on an eternal Gladiators travellator. To get traction every visual asset commissioned should be created with a goals mindset and deliberate brief. If a business takes what it has to offer seriously then that has to be proportionately reflected in it’s presentation to the world. With managed expectations there are ways of extracting extra value from the time your photographer or film maker are with you. Planning is key.
