Did you know Black History Month wasn't always a month long? Here are five fun facts about the celebration: 1️⃣ From "Week" to "Month": In 1926, it was established as a week to highlight Black American achievements. It wasn't until the 1970s, fueled by the Civil Rights Movement, that it became a month-long celebration! 2️⃣ February's Special Dates: The week coincided with Abraham Lincoln's and Frederick Douglass' birthdays, honoring their roles in Black history. 3️⃣ A Growing Movement: Mayors across the US started recognizing the week-long celebration, and by the late 1960s, college communities embraced it as Black History Month. 4️⃣ Presidential Recognition: In 1976, President Gerald Ford officially recognized Black History Month, urging people to honor Black achievements "too often neglected." 5️⃣ "Every Year’s Celebration is Themed": The 2024 theme celebrates Black Americans' immense influence on various art forms, from music and film to fashion and literature. February is Black History Month, a time to celebrate the achievements of Black communities and honor the significant role and impact they have made on all facets of life and society throughout history. As Black History Month draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the profound impact it has had on our collective consciousness. This month serves as a poignant reminder of the resilience, strength, and immeasurable contributions of Black individuals throughout history. It's a time to honor the trailblazers who fought tirelessly for justice, equality, and freedom in the face of adversity and oppression. From activists and artists to scientists and leaders, their legacies continue to inspire generations, reshaping the narrative of our shared history and shaping a more inclusive future. As we bid farewell to Black History Month, let us carry forward the spirit of recognition, appreciation, and celebration beyond the confines of these 29 days (shoutout to leap year). Let us commit ourselves to ongoing education, empathy, and allyship in the fight against systemic racism and injustice. May we amplify Black voices, support Black-owned businesses, and champion diversity and inclusion in all aspects of our lives. By acknowledging the past, we honor the present, and pave the way for a brighter, more equitable tomorrow for all.

In the words of Dr. Robert Livingston: "Black history is not just for Black people. Black history IS American history." Black History Month celebrates more than the history of the heritage and cultural contributions to our country. We also celebrate history in the making and there are some truly incredible things happening in the community that will undoubtedly shape the future. Today I would like to shine a spotlight on some of my friends who are making a huge impact and inspiring future generations of leaders across the country: Have you seen what entrepreneurs like Stanley Rameau and Derek E. Canton are up to in the financial community? How about the philanthropy of Calvin M., David Z. Everett, and The Equitas Group? Emerson Foster and Paul Francisco (He, Him, His) are literally bringing thousands of Black professionals together each year to network and uplift one another via the Men's and Women's Dinner Group! Thank you to each of you for breaking barriers, paving the way, and educating others through your work. Black history is more than slavery, civil rights, and cultural richness. It is about resilience, innovation, and creating an impact on the entire world.

I hosted an event years ago called “The Neglected 337” which was a conversation about Black history being relegated to Black History Month. I am so proud of the efforts that contributed to the establishment of this celebratory month and others like it. However, I don’t believe the intent was to restrict the celebration and acknowledgment of the many facets of black history and culture to a single month- not any other cultural heritage observance. Similarly, the integration of historical education in diversity, equity, inclusion, justice and belonging initiatives was not so folks can pass a pop quiz about black historical facts nor to exploit the pain and suffering of black people for seasonal sympathetic experiences for folks. The true wealth of these celebrations is found in the way it broadens and expands what we see, believe, envision and create for black people, and thus our world. It is context to help shape and encourage new habits and behaviors to improve and enhance our society. We need more than a month to appropriately celebrate our history and culture. Black history and culture is world history and culture. The quality of our acknowledgment and appreciation of culture and heritage is the measure of the quality of our society.

February is Black History Month, a time to celebrate the immense contributions, rich culture, and enduring resilience of Black Americans throughout history. While celebrations of Black achievement shouldn't be relegated to one month, we're taking extra time in February for honest self-reflection and for interrogating of how we, as an organization, contribute to systemic racism. * This month, we plan to hold a Black History Month-themed Lunch and Learn on the topic of Malcolm X. * Additionally, as we draft the next iteration of our Strategic Plan, this has been an important time to examine how we, as individuals and as a team, can actively combat racism and discrimination. * Our Racial Equity Guiding Document, created by staff and adopted by the board last year, continues to guide this work (available at: https://lnkd.in/gAqYGPQb) as does the staff-led Racial Equity Committee. * Finally, a newly forming client advisory committee will lift of the voices of our constituents to better identify needs within the community and how we can better address them. Stay tuned for more about this work and about PANOW's 2025 Strategic Plan, which will again center racial equity as a key component.

As we celebrate Black History Month, let us not only commemorate the achievements of the past but also pledge to contribute towards a sustainable future.   Black History Month allows us to acknowledge our past and confront the ongoing challenges faced by many Black individuals in achieving sustainability. But this requires a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in all sectors. Businesses and organizations must actively work towards creating environments that provide equal opportunities for everyone, regardless of their background. Diversity not only fosters innovation but also ensures that the benefits of economic growth are shared by all.   In the field  of financial consulting, it is crucial to recognize the disparities that exist and to actively work towards dismantling these systemic barriers through promoting economic justice, supporting educational initiatives, and fostering inclusive environments so that we can collectively work towards a society where excellence is a reality for every individual, irrespective of their racial background.    Together, we can ensure that the legacy of Black history continues to inspire positive change in the pursuit of a more equitable and sustainable world. ✊🏾

🌟 Black History Month invites us to embrace not only the extraordinary achievements of notable Black figures but also to recognize and celebrate the everyday lives and contributions of Black individuals. It’s a time to reflect on the societal expectations placed on people of color—that to be acknowledged, one must be exceptional in some way. This month, let’s challenge that narrative and affirm that being oneself, in all aspects of life, is inherently valuable and worthy of celebration. Notable figures like Maya Angelou, Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, and James Baldwin have left indelible marks on our history and culture. However, the strength and essence of the Black community also lie in its teachers, nurses, artists, parents, and all those who contribute to the richness of our shared society by simply being themselves. As we engage in Black History Month, let’s commit to recognizing and valuing the diverse contributions of the Black community, not as exceptions but as integral parts of the tapestry of our collective history. It’s an opportunity to affirm that excellence comes in countless forms and that every individual, regardless of their background, enriches our community simply by being part of it.
