⚽ The most sustainable football championship to date? ⚽ Football is a carbon-heavy business. Energy-intensive stadiums, fan travel, merchandise, and catering can make major championships as carbon-intensive as a small country like Barbados over a few weeks. At COP 28 in December, UEFA presented its 32 million-euro environmental, social, and governance strategy for Euro 2024. The strategy aims at sustainability and promises the most eco-friendly European championship to date, supported by the German Football Federation's environmental standards for clubs. 🌿 Here are some of the Sustainability Measures taken by Germany's for Euro 2024: UEFA is funding discounted rail travel to reduce the carbon footprint associated with fan transportation. 🚂 Germany only uses existing energy-efficient stadiums to minimise emissions by using renewable power, reducing floodlighting, and employing eco-friendly generators. 🏟 Vegetarian alternatives will be offered alongside traditional foods with minimal, recyclable packaging, and reusable cups will be used in all stadiums and public viewing areas. 🌭 Germany is also minimising water use and restricting power consumption in media centres to further reduce the tournament's environmental impact. 💡 Jevon Hannah Charlie Rory Dan Tom Tom Ashley Patrick Maddi Curtis

With the EU’s Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) set to impact around 150 football clubs across Europe, the European Club Association (ECA) has unveiled a comprehensive sustainability strategy. This move aims to support clubs in adhering to new regulations while promoting sustainable practices both on and off the pitch. Here’s what clubs need to know and the steps ahead. 1: What does the new sustainability strategy entail for European football clubs? The ECA’s strategy provides practical support and knowledge-sharing opportunities to help clubs comply with the CSRD. This includes developing guidelines, training courses, and a dedicated CSRD Task Force, ensuring clubs are prepared to meet disclosure requirements by the 2027 deadline. 2: How will the CSRD impact clubs of different sizes and structures? Clubs with over €40 million in turnover, €20 million in balance sheet, or more than 250 employees must publish sustainability reports by the 2025/26 season. Smaller clubs will start with less stringent requirements in the following season, emphasizing a phased approach to compliance. 3: What role can clubs play in promoting sustainability beyond compliance? Clubs are encouraged to lead by example, influencing fans and communities to adopt sustainable habits. Initiatives like waste segregation and sustainable travel can significantly reduce environmental impacts. This approach not only aligns with regulatory requirements but also enhances social responsibility and community engagement. #SportsBusiness #Football #SportsBiz #Finance #Data #Intelligence #Sustainability

Brilliant engagement and feedback from NGBs at this webinar with insightful speakers Julie Duffus, Lindita Xhaferi-Salihu, Jana Janotova & Dan Reading CEnv CMP. 🌱 UN Frameworks on climate and nature help sporting orgs come together as a coalition of the willing. 🌱 Big role for sports to play in creating demand for better products and services, influencing suppliers. 🌱 Think about where the conversation on climate change/sport was 10 years ago and then think about where it will be in 10 years time - the impacts on our sector will be even more significant. 🌱 Cannot decouple climate and nature, we all need to step up and do more. 🌱 Openess and transparency from all partners in the sporting system needed to support NGBs in delivering sustainability action. Loving how the UK Sport Accelerator sustainability support programme delivered by Useful Projects & Sporting Giants is nurturing a peer network amongst NGBs, creating spaces for learning, challenge and collective action. #teamoftomorrow #sustainability #sport
What a line up! Our Co-Founder Dan Reading CEnv CMP was privileged to host a fantastic panel for a UK Sport masterclass to explore some of the international frameworks that sport organisations can participate in. These frameworks demonstrate an organisations commitment as well as facilitating collaborations to use their platforms for engagement as well as tackling shared challenges. The masterclass was part of UK Sport's Accelerator programme which involves creating carbon footprints and environmental sustainability action plans for 40 National Governing Bodies, most of whom attended this masterclass. the Accelerator programme is being co-delivered by Sporting Giants and Useful Projects. Thanks to the panel for their presentations and the attendees for their engagement.

🇪🇺🌱 The EU wants to lead a just transition to a green economy. 📝📊 One of the ways they’ve approached this is to establish new sustainability reporting standards. 🏟️🏋️♂️ This will affect sport organisations in one way or another, regardless of their size, and independent of whether reporting is a legal requirement for them or simply “encouraged”. ✍ 🗓 For those that might find it useful, I’ve written a summary of the recently published voluntary draft standard for SMEs that’s open for comment until mid-May. #CRSD #ESRS #SustainabilityReporting #SportsBiz 🏄♀️
