Content and context that matters! In one of my chat groups with colleagues someone posted this #video of Eintracht Frankfurt fan Helmut Sonneberg. It left a deep impact on me. It shows the power, passion and innocense of sports. Also its fragility. The need to sometimes pause and reflect. But most importantly, it is a superb example of what we as #sports #journalists can - and should do - in order not to be abused as a stage. Well done, #ARD! Historically, sports was subject to this, abused as a platform. It is highly popular, hence the link to populists jumping on the occasion isn't a long stretch. #OlympicGames and #FIFAWorldCups have been the victim of it. Sometimes active part. The discussion during the #Qatar World Cup derailed. But is it that wrong, to wear this captains band? To stand for human rights? Events and federations can´t really be apolitcal given the economic impact they have today. Looking back on my week, I really appreciated DFB president Bernd Neuendorf not shying away from also highlighting the dark chapters of the worlds biggest sports frederation. The video of Helmut Sonneberg though was the highlight of my week! A week in which important things are discussed in our parliament. We all need to reflect on how we act, talk, agitate these days. #sportswashing #sge #politics #dfb #fifa #content # Quelle: ARD / Fussball 2000

📢 Great to see some leadership on sport and human rights: MEPs call on FIFA to take immediate action and develop a credible strategy for the 2034 football World Cup in human rights black hole Saudi Arabia. "The decision to award the 2034 World Cup to Saudi Arabia undermines the principles upon which FIFA was founded, as well as the promises made after the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. In the aftermath of the 2022 tournament, FIFA pledged to incorporate human rights criteria into its selection process. However, it appears that these commitments have not been substantiated in practice, and the recent decision calls into question FIFA's true dedication to human rights. According to a study by Amnesty International and the Sport & Rights Alliance, Saudi Arabia’s bid fails to adequately outline how the country will meet FIFA's human rights standards. The report highlights the risk of severe and widespread human rights violations if the tournament proceeds without proper safeguards. When it comes to environmental sustainability, FIFA has previously committed to reducing emissions by 50% by 2030 and to reaching net-zero by 2040 in line with the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (“UNFCCC”) Sports for Climate Action Framework principles. However, in 2024, FIFA announced a record four-year global partnership with the world's largest oil producer and exporter aramco, contradictory to FIFA's climate target and the Paris Agreement. In light of this, we call on FIFA to take immediate action and develop a credible strategy for the 2034 World Cup. This strategy must include, among other things, binding commitments on the following critical issues: ➡️ Ensuring that all fans, regardless of gender, race, religion, or sexuality, will not face discrimination. ➡️ Ensuring that residents will not be forcibly evicted. ➡️ Ensuring that migrant workers will not be exploited. ➡️ Ensuring that a sustainable climate strategy is in place for continuously reducing emissions We would like to emphasize that these commitments must be subject to a zero-tolerance policy, with clear accountability mechanisms in place to guarantee compliance. FIFA must demonstrate leadership by prioritizing human rights in its decision-making, and this should be a condition for any future World Cup host." It was just amazing moments. Knowing the French culture for sports and their passion for "spectacles", I knew these would be amazing games. FELICITATION LA 🇫🇷 France!! #paris2024 But to see the transformation of Europe, Germany, the world, the TV stations, the positive attitude from “rain” to bright sunshine and simply the general comments on the games, made me feel that for a short period of 2 weeks the world spoke one language "the language of sport" and everyone could feel the passion of sport! I feel that the world finally has a "common sense" and follows the same values. Many times I have had tears in my eyes with joy or simply emotionally touched by these games. The feeling of competing in peace, the glory of losing as well as the tears of losing with the will to get up again. To see the efforts of the athletes finally pay off in a medal or simply in the joy of being part of something so great. Athletes who do not win millions, but sacrifice their lives, their bodies and their time to live the life of an athlete. Coaches who give their full support and are the backbone and the trust for the athletes. Sport is MORE. As all athletes know, as all commentators and invited guests in fantastic TV shows have said. 🔴Sport unites 🔵Sport brings peace ⚫️Sports brings happiness 🟡Sport sets goals and drives passion 🟢Sport creates mentors for future generations Opening the games to the public all over the city and ending it with a marathon to make everyone feel like an athlete is just amazing. Young and old could watch and feel the sport 24/7 on free TV. ARD / ZDF This is how we plant the seeds of sports enthusiasm. Medals will follow if we follow this path with accessible structures and qualification. Hopefully, this message will reach and stay with the governing bodies and politicians to support athletes, coaches, sports institutions and interdisciplinary sports events. https://lnkd.in/eezdeBTc

International Olympic Committee Presidential Elections: Crucial for India’s Hosting Aspirations . The upcoming IOC presidential elections hold significant importance for India, as the newly elected leader will play a key role in deciding whether India secures the opportunity to host the Olympics. Seven candidates are vying for the presidency of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in a pivotal election set for March 20, 2025, in Greece. This marks the first contested election since Thomas Bach's tenure began in 2013, as he steps down after reaching the maximum limit of 12 years in office. Candidates Overview: 1)Sebastian Coe (UK): President of World Athletics and a two-time Olympic gold medalist, Coe is viewed as a leading candidate, advocating for transformative changes within the IOC and promising to enhance member engagement in decision-making processes. 2) Kirsty Coventry (Zimbabwe): The current sports minister of Zimbabwe and an Olympic gold medalist, Coventry could become the first woman to lead the IOC. She is often seen as a favored candidate by Bach. 3) Juan Antonio Samaranch Jr. (Spain): The son of a former IOC president, Samaranch Jr. brings a legacy perspective to his candidacy. 4) Prince Feisal Al Hussein (Jordan): A member of the Jordanian royal family, he adds a diplomatic dimension to the race. 5) David Lappartient (France): President of the International Cycling Union, Lappartient focuses on sustainability and youth engagement. 6) Johan Eliasch (Sweden): The head of the International Ski Federation, Eliasch emphasizes climate change initiatives. 7) Morinari Watanabe (Japan): President of the International Gymnastics Federation, Watanabe advocates for gender equality in sports. The candidates presented their visions at a closed-door event in Lausanne on January 30, where they had 15 minutes each to pitch their ideas to over 100 IOC voters without any Q&A sessions. This unique format highlights the opaque nature of IOC elections, where direct engagement with voters is limited. As we approach this significant election, key challenges await the next president, including addressing climate change impacts on sports schedules, gender issues in athletics, and negotiating future broadcasting deals. The new leader will officially take office on June 23, 2025, following a transitional period alongside Bach. #indiasportsindustry #sports #sportsbiz #india

Train, plane, or bus? That is the conundrum many national teams have faced during this Euros. It has now been revealed that only six teams opted for the track during the group stages, despite UEFA encouraging greater use of public transport. Of the 130 journeys made by teams, around 60% were by bus and only 12% used a train. A quarter of journeys were short-haul flights. Switzerland and Romania are the tournament’s most sustainable travellers, having used the train the most. Spain, meanwhile, have used short-haul flights to get to every single one of their matches. And both Turkey and England have taken flights under 30 minutes to travel to games. The environmental impact of these short flights is around 7 times larger than taking the train! Sporting success is the ultimate priority for teams, and with tight schedules, delays and cancellations have meant teams have sometimes had to opt for a flight. The Netherlands, for example, had to take a flight to Dortmund last night as the train they were scheduled to ride was cancelled due to a blockage on the route. Ultimately, national teams have a role model function and as Barbara Metz from Environmental Action Germany says, “Football is not the only player in society that flies such short distances or somewhere for such occasions. That’s what we do in business, we do that on short trips. And that is why the overall social and systemic question is the decisive one. But if football can ensure that this debate is initiated, then it is a value in itself.” #Euro2024 #Sustainability https://lnkd.in/e5fYM5vB

🏟️ The Future of Football: Saudi Arabia to Host the 2034 FIFA Men's World Cup 🌍 The announcement of Saudi Arabia as the host of the 2034 FIFA Men's World Cup marks a transformative moment in global football 🌟. While this decision has stirred excitement and controversy alike, it sets the stage for a tournament that promises to blend ambition, infrastructure, and a redefinition of sports diplomacy ⚽. Saudi Arabia's vision for the World Cup is nothing short of monumental 🏗️. With plans to host matches across 15 stadiums in five cities, including the construction of 11 new state-of-the-art arenas, the country is investing heavily in reshaping its global image. Beyond stadiums, Saudi Arabia aims to build 185,000 hotel rooms and upgrade its transportation infrastructure 🚆. These developments align with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s Vision 2030—a roadmap for economic diversification and global prominence. However, this announcement has ignited heated debates 🔥. Critics argue that awarding the World Cup to Saudi Arabia, a nation with a documented history of human rights violations, raises ethical concerns. Human rights organizations, including Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, have called on FIFA to ensure the safety and fair treatment of migrant workers who will bear the brunt of the country’s massive construction demands 🏗️. For FIFA, this decision represents a gamble 🎲. The organization has defended its choice, with President Gianni Infantino stating that hosting such a high-profile event brings an opportunity for "real and lasting change" ✨. FIFA's hope is that global attention will push Saudi Arabia to improve human rights standards, but whether these aspirations will translate into action remains to be seen. From a footballing perspective, the tournament is expected to draw record-breaking global audiences 📺. With 48 teams and over 100 matches, the 2034 World Cup promises to be a spectacle of unprecedented scale. Saudi Arabia's role as host reflects a broader trend of football’s globalization, as emerging markets seek to cement their place in the world of sport 🌏. Despite the promise of economic growth and a reimagined footballing legacy 🥅, Saudi Arabia’s hosting raises questions about the role of “sportswashing”—the use of sports to divert attention from domestic and international criticism 🕊️. The nation’s track record on freedom of expression, gender equality, and migrant labor casts a shadow over its bid, and FIFA’s decision to forgo competitive bidding for the 2034 tournament has fueled further skepticism 🤔. The road to the 2034 World Cup is paved with both hope and challenges 🌟. As construction begins and global scrutiny mounts, the world will watch closely. Will Saudi Arabia rise to the occasion and deliver a tournament that not only dazzles on the field but also drives meaningful progress off it? Only time will tell ⏳.
