⚽ EURO 2024: A Greener and More Sustainable Event Based on Three Principles: Prevent, Reduce, and Offset 🌎 🔶️ EURO 2024 is positioning itself as a benchmark for sustainability in the sports world. UEFA aims to differentiate itself from FIFA by adopting a more virtuous model for the planet.💪 Given that EURO remains the 3rd largest sporting event in the world, after the Olympics and the FIFA World Cup.🏆 How is EURO 2024 committed? 1️⃣ Single Host Country: Unlike the 2021 edition, held in 11 countries, EURO 2024 will be held in Germany only, reducing the ecological footprint of travel. 🚆 Prioritizing Rail Transport: Ticket holders benefit from discounted long-distance train fares, and an InterRail Euro 2024 pass is available from 32 European countries to Germany. Teams are required to use trains or buses for two of their three trips. 📅 Optimized Scheduling: Around twenty matches will be played within 50 km of each other to minimize travel. 🏟 Sustainable Infrastructure: No new stadiums have been built specifically for the event, thus limiting environmental impact. 🌎 Carbon Offset: For every ton of CO2 emitted during EURO 2024, €25 will be donated to the Climate Fund, covering the emission of 280,000 tons of CO2. 🍳 Food and Waste Management: In the stadiums, drinks will be served in reusable eco-cups, and vegan sausages will be offered as an option to meat —an ambitious initiative for the land of sausages. ✨️A model to follow, especially for our worldwide sporting event expected in 2026. Our position for global sporting events is that organisers must measure emissions using a science-based approach, continuously lower their footprint, standardise sustainability provisions and communicate their claims, honestly, accurately and simply to avoid greenwashing accusations and ensure accountability. Our latest article analyses the International Olympic Committee – IOC’s climate claims for the Paris Games. Unlike FIFA’s unverified claims for the Qatar World Cup, the IOC’s “contribution approach” offers more credibility. The projected carbon emissions for the Paris Olympics are 1.75mt, which will be half that of the Tokyo Olympics if the data is accurate. The article also examines other major sporting events, such as UEFA EURO 2024, which aimed to set a new standard for event sustainability for global sporting events. We then look ahead to the next Women's football tournament, UEFA’s Euro 2025, which has the potential to lead by taking full responsibility for all emissions.
