Here's one often overlooked piece of advice for running an effective board meeting: Boards often come together to discuss the challenges the nonprofit is facing and what the strategy will be to solve those issues, but don't forget to celebrate the wins too. Whether you crushed the year end giving campaign goal or served more people than ever before, highlight where things went right to keep your board informed and reminded of why they volunteer with the organization in the first place! Founder, C-Suite leader known for developing inclusive cultures focused on high performance for companies and philanthropies seeking to drive greater impact in the world
Must read report and gratitude to Giving Gap for setting the record straight with data and insights to draw attention to the critical role and high performance of nonprofits founded by Black leaders. We need more large scale philanthropy, like Fidelity Charitable Catalyst Fund, addressing the funding disparities for communities of color and their nonprofits. "Despite their unwavering commitment to addressing our country's greatest social challenges, Black leaders and their organizations are forced to navigate a funding ecosystem that unfairly advantages their white counterparts and restricts their own capacity for growth." Joint-Heir With Christ | I teach Nonprofits To Raise Money & Recruit Quality Board Members | Founder, Nonprofit School | VP Client Services, SM LLC | NANOE Certified Nonprofit Consultant & Development Executive
A frequent question I hear is, “How do I get my board members involved and supporting our mission?” This is important because, truthfully, 80% of struggling nonprofits can trace their challenges to weak or disengaged boards. Many board members don’t fully understand the vital role they play. They may think their only job is to attend meetings and hold the title. But that’s far from true. A nonprofit board has serious responsibilities, and if those are neglected, the organization is bound to suffer. A nonprofit isn’t a one-person operation; it thrives when the community rallies behind its impact. But how can you expect the community to get involved if the people closest to the organization—your board—aren’t on board themselves?
