Recently, another TEDxYerevan event took place, and, as always, it became more than just an exchange of knowledge and ideas. The organizers are fostering a culture of kindness and mindfulness, showing that not only information matters, but also respect, understanding, and support for both listeners and speakers. This inspired me to reflect on how this philosophy aligns with the way fan culture shapes the atmosphere of sports. Experienced #hockey fans value courage and fairness in the game, knowing well that not all fights are acceptable. It’s important that they remain one-on-one, without surprise attacks or interference from other players. Our spectators still have much to learn about discouraging unsportsmanlike behavior. We are working on instilling this culture by ensuring that Армянская Хоккейная Лига representatives are present in the stands. In #tennis, fan culture manifests differently. On the court, it’s considered inappropriate to applaud when a player makes an unforced error unless it results from the opponent’s skill. This restraint shows respect for both athletes and highlights genuine sporting achievements. At hockey games, the stands roar with energy and excitement, reflecting the passion of the sport. At tennis matches silence is observed during points, respecting the players’ focus and concentration. Sport is more than just wins and losses. It’s a space where respect, support, and fair play matter. Fan culture helps preserve these values, making sports truly unifying and inspiring. I hope that, through our efforts, such a culture will continue to grow and thrive.

Are you inspired by individuals or clubs in your community who are paving the way for a more sustainable future in sports? FrontRunners Athletes are looking for GameChangers championing sustainability at the local level. To nominate yourself or someone else as a GameChanger, head to the link below.
FrontRunners is excited to launch our latest campaign, GameChangers, aiming to inspire positive change by giving a platform to everyday heroes from the sporting community, recognising and rewarding their efforts. We know there are people all over the country working hard at developing and executing sustainability initiatives at a local level – away from the spotlight of the professional end of the game, international tournaments, and public recognition. GameChangers is a chance to platform these initiatives and ensure our local sporting heroes share the stage with the big guns. Whether it's implementing climate-friendly practices, leading environmental initiatives, or fostering a culture of sustainability, FrontRunners want to recognise these contributions to a greener future. There are some cool prizes up for grabs, including a Pat Cummins’ signed cricket bat, tickets to the first two weeks of the 2024 Toyota AFL - Australian Football League Finals Series, tickets to game of choice during the international summer of Cricket Australia in Australia, and more. The campaign is open for submissions until August 9th, 2024. To nominate yourself or someone else as a Game Changer, simply fill out the nomination form: https://lnkd.in/gQM98cjn

Glad to have this one out just after the Games. There has been a lot of discussion about what should or shouldn't be an Olympic sport, but a big part of that conversation is missing some of the detail of what process leads to inclusion. Crucially, all sports need to think how to innovate with their formats and what they add to the portfolio of sports, while also ensuring that younger audiences are engaged. With more content consumption on mobile broadcast channels and with this featuring more in the claims made about global impact, this is an important element of what makes a sport appealing for organizers. Figure out how to be big on TikTok and you're onto a good start, but the basics need to be there in terms of participation base, alignment with governance expectations, and adding something different to the programme are all key considerations.
Post Paris success, Olympics eye the future with new sporting formats to widen youth appeal

Friday Nonsense™, entry #412: Citius, altius, fortius. Cerritulus? Suggested audio[1]: Peter Gabriel’s ‘Games Without Frontiers’ “It’s all in the game though, right?”—Omar Little[2] It always surprises me when people see (or seek to silo) sports and politics as separate entities. (Some of you may recall ‘shut up and dribble’[3]). As one of the biggest global sporting events unfolds for us[4], let’s have a look at how they intersect there. Turns out even the V1 Olympics were highly political—the games quickly became part of the chess board, with various Greek city-states waging war to control the Altis[5] and generally getting up to shenanigans. The athletes themselves also mixed the two. Pantarces of Elis, for example, was an OG triple threat—champion wrestler, medal-winning equestrian _and_ negotiated a truce between the Eleans and the Achaens[6]. ‘Shut up and negotiate that POW swap’, I guess. The V2 Olympics? At least six modern-era Games have been boycotted for political reasons[7]. If politics and business are bedfellows[8], and sports and politics are too, perhaps sports and business also have a more than casual acquaintance. I’ve written about FIFA in this regard before[9], the same holds true here. The IOC, ostensibly a not-for-profit, garners roughly 2/3 of its revenue from broadcast rights, and 1/3 from sponsorships. Securing those partnerships does, however, generate some very commercial permutations. Until only recently, Rule 40 prevented athletes whose personal sponsors didn’t align with official ones from leveraging those relationships during the Games themselves[9B]. After the Germans rightly raised a stink[10], those rules have since relaxed a bit. Aside from these prosaic intersections, the Games also provide us the sublime (personal favorite is Alex Sedrick’s lights-out try to tie the women’s rugby bronze medal game against powerhouse Australia[11]) and the surreal. Stand-out here is the Seine situation. Pollution has prevented Parisians from swimming in it since 1923, cleaning it[12] has long been a political promise[13]. It’s a phenomenal and worthy goal. Tying it to an Olympic deadline, however, was...just politics. €1.4B and much political theatre later[14], how did it go? A bit of a nail-biter. In the lead-up, the Gallic ‘penchant for protest’[15] is best-described by its hashtag (#jechiedanslaseine). And for several days, one of the Olympics’ most grueling events threatened to become a duathlon, as fecal matter levels remained too high in the days prior. Training swims were cancelled, the men’s event postponed. Last word goes to Ainsley Thorpe, a triathlete from New Zealand—“it didn’t taste great”[16]. TL;DR? This Olympic post brought to you by Visa[17]. (Complimentary dad joke: It’s all Greek to me). Happy Friday, all. #olympics #ocm #innovation #history #transformation #strategy #culture #resilience #management #futurism #olympics2024 #music #technology #future #creativity #fn412 #fridaynonsense
