Should you always build #padel courts under cover? Yes. Temperatures as low as minus 4 in #Stockport this week and snow on the ground for the first time this year ❄. We lost 48 hours of play to weather and when you also consider the impact of Storm Bert, not a great week for outdoor padel play. We always knew this was a project site to test and trial everything and so it is what it is but.. Every single Soul Padel club we open will have covered courts, not indoor courts as that's not our model, but courts with a roof and sides to protect against the "great" British weather. Us Brits are hardy souls and we do almost anything in any weather, we love the great outdoors but we dislike getting wet. Covered courts are a non-negotiable for us even when we open in #Australia... 🇦🇺 #padel #growth #sport #investment #community #weather #accessibility

When Darren Soh asked me to contribute a short chapter for his book "BEFORE IT ALL GOES: ARCHITECTURE FROM SINGAPORE’S EARLY INDEPENDENCE YEARS" in 2018, I wrote about swimming pools, namely Buona Vista Swimming Complex and Bedok Swimming Complex. Specifically on the latter's ensemble of sports facilities, I wrote: "The Bedok Sports Hall, completed subsequently in 1987, has a hexagonal plan and sport geometrically complex V-shaped columns. It is apparent that this group of sports amenities was planned holistically at the same time, and the visually strong diagonal forms as a common thread running through all three designs attest to that. Collectively, they contribute to the unique ensemble of geometric forms in Bedok. Now, the pools have been drained. It is no longer bustling, awaiting its fate. The Stadium and Sports Hall remain in use for now but their fate is yet to be known. As with other post-independence architecture, they are deemed by most as too “young” to be conserved and may slip away from us sooner than thought." 6 years have passed and redevelopment plans are now being considered. I hope that they will be adapted rather than demolished. https://lnkd.in/g5vdYbiv

With the Olympics on, as part of this young people's camp I am part of and organise, we decided to host the Woodlands Olympics. So a local Olympics. This can be a good organising principle for young people. devising Olympic-like sports with what they do in the everyday. It draws don't the notion and symbolic referencing of the concept 'Olympics' and what it means, and slightly askew it. Several immediate game structures do this, the most known is the 'Office Olympics'. It has a built-in irony, and an idea of the epic in the everyday as in offices people compete in wheely chair raises and paper clip archery. Here with the young people, we had mock medals, ceremonies and fanfare for games like drawing a perfect circle and the paper aeroplane throwing competing, and rather obtusely, flying as a bird gymnastics. The idea of the hugely expensive and spectacular Olympics is bought back down to earth when people stage such events for themselves with what is too hand. What Everyday Olympics would you host in your area?

Day 229: World Squash Masters & An Epic Opportunity in Austin, Texas 🌍🏆 Today, I had the privilege of watching Nick Sutcliffe cruise to victory at the World Squash Masters, showcasing his incredible skill even against an Egyptian opponent—no easy feat given Egypt’s dominance in the sport. But beyond the court, Nick and his team are onto something huge with Rush Club. They’re developing a state-of-the-art facility in Austin, Texas, featuring 15 Pickleball courts and 2 Padel courts, all connected to a cool bar and restaurant strip. This project is more than just a sports venue—it’s set to become the biggest facility in Austin, right in the heart of what is fast becoming the health and wellness capital of the U.S. Pickleball is a $1B industry, and it’s booming. Why wouldn’t you want to be part of it? There’s massive demand for racquet sports, but the number of available venues is lagging. Nick’s business is set to fill that gap in a big way. With Austin as home to the world’s #1 and #2 Pickleball players, and with the sport virtually exploding in popularity, this project is positioned to become a cornerstone of the community. While Padel is growing more slowly, the focus today is squarely on Pickleball, where the opportunity is ripe. Let’s rally behind Nick on this journey. It’s an awesome opportunity to be part of something truly special. $2M left to take up this massive opportunity. Only 2 weeks to go—get in quick! Pivot Sports is the mobile app we are building to support this growing sport. 🏓🏸🎾 #WorldSquashMasters #Pickleball #Padel #RealEstate #InvestmentOpportunities #AustinTexas #RushClub #Squash #SportsInnovation #HealthAndWellness #SupportLocal #PivotSports #Day229of366 Liz Irving Jason Calacanis Debbie Hill

❗️Important update for coaches, players, parents, volunteers and anyone involved in grassroots sport❗️ The Sport and Recreation Alliance has published an updated version of the UK Concussion Guidelines for Non-Elite (Grassroots) Sport. It aims to help players, coaches, parents, schools, National Governing Bodies and sports administrators to identify, manage and prevent concussion. This was first published in 2023 & the latest version contains two specific updates: -Clarification that the guidelines apply to all grassroots sports participants, including disabled people (an accessible version of the guidance is available via the website) -Inclusion of some frequently asked questions (FAQs) to help clarify and aid understanding of the graduated return to activity and sport process. The guidelines remain clear that anybody suspected of a having a concussion should be immediately removed from play. A graduated return to daily activity, school, work and ultimately sport is recommended to reduce the risks of slow recovery, further brain injury and longer-term problems.
Today, the Sport and Recreation Alliance is publishing an updated version of the UK Concussion Guidelines for Non-Elite (Grassroots) Sport. Overall, the guidelines remind everyone of the simple message 'If in doubt, sit them out', with two specific updates included in the latest version. We will be intending to undertake more in-depth work on the implementation of the new guidelines. Since the initial publication, many sports bodies have adopted the guidelines and provided bespoke guidance and resources to support grassroots clubs, participants and volunteers. Swedes are unique, he said. Maybe it’s because you live in a place where you’ve historically had to rely on each other to survive the long, harsh winters. If you travel across Sweden and pay attention, you might notice that many houses from the last century share similar designs. Before prefabricated houses became common, there was a time when people built their homes themselves. To do so, they needed to purchase blueprints from a builder or an architect. To make housing more accessible and affordable during the cold winters, house blueprints were created and made freely available to anyone who wanted to build their own home. There were only a handful of designs to choose from, but it was enough to provide a foundation for self-reliance. Another initiative that supports self-sufficiency and community well-being is “allmänhetens åkning” (public skating). Search for it online, and you’ll find the nearest location to go ice skating in Sweden. With second-hand skates and a helmet—or borrowed equipment—you can enjoy fresh air, exercise, and improved health, all at little to no cost. Do you know of more public initiatives for citizens to help themselves ? #SelfReliance #MSB #Kungsträdgården #Sweden
