For those unfamiliar, the dampening system applies a precise amount of fountain solution (a water-based mixture) to the printing plate. This solution keeps the non-image areas ink-repellent, ensuring clean and crisp prints. Here's why a well-maintained dampening system is crucial: • Print Quality : Consistent ink-water balance translates to vibrant colors, sharp details, and minimized printing defects. • Efficiency: Optimal dampening reduces waste and press downtime caused by issues like scumming or tinting. • Plate Longevity: Proper water balance protects the printing plate, extending its lifespan. **MPH Printing Solutions 101: Tackling Banding Issues in Flexo Printing** Are you experiencing banding problems in your flexo printing, such as intermittent dark lines of varying density and width in the print direction? At MPH, we know that these problems can affect your print quality. Here are some common causes and solutions to help you overcome these challenges. One possible cause is incorrect web tension, where the substrate moves independently of the plate movement. Adjusting the web tension, cleaning and lubricating the rollers, and checking the web tension control system can help alleviate this problem. If the problem is gear bottoming off the pitch line, refer to solutions for 'gear marks'. Intermittent plate slippage can be addressed by running bearings. High ink viscosity can also cause binding, so be sure to adjust the viscosity accordingly. The use of non-compressive sticky backs can be problematic, so opt for cushioned sticky backs instead. Low durometer plates can also contribute to binding problems, so it is important to use plates with the correct durometer. By addressing these common issues, you can achieve smoother, higher quality prints.
