Why Does Community Belonging Matter? For the people we support at Aurora Nexus, community isn’t just a place, it’s a lifeline. It’s the feeling of being valued, the opportunity to build friendships, and the chance to connect with others in meaningful ways. Whether it’s attending a local event, joining a community group, or simply being included in day-to-day activities, these connections empower individuals with learning disabilities and autism to feel seen, heard, and appreciated. Belonging creates confidence and inspires independence. It’s not just about being included, it’s about being celebrated for who you are. Together, we can build communities where everyone has a place and a purpose 🌱 🧡 Help us create these connections by donating via our website and being part of driving a more inclusive, connected future for everyone. #charity #community #london #inclusivecommunities #communitybelonging #learningdisabilities #autismsupport #southlondoncharity #personcentredcare #buildingconnections #inclusionmatters #empoweringindependence #charitywork

How can you provide a sense of safety for foster youth in your care? One of the most important roles that you will play as a foster parent is to ensure that the youth in your care truly feel like they are welcomed and are in a safe environment. It can be unsettling and jarring to move to a new place, and for our youth, this type of change might also be triggering or upsetting. That is why it is so vital to stick to routines, have a clear and open line of communication, and always keep things consistent whenever possible. However, should you ever need to implement a change, try to give the youth a heads-up. It's all about building trust and ensuring they know they're valued and understood. Spoon theory is a common way to show how tasks can affect people. The spoons represent a unit of energy. People with disabilities and chronic illnesses can need more 'spoons' to complete the same task. Is there a disability support network for charities and charity professionals or volunteers in the UK? If there isn't, I'm interested in setting one up! I think there's a need for a voluntary network where disabled people and charities/non profits can come together to share best practice, ideas and lived experience on all things accessibility and inclusion. My fledgling idea is for this to be free in order to remove any barriers. Maybe you're a disabled person who wants to network with other disabled people or wants to help make the charity space more accessible and inclusive. Maybe you work for or volunteer for a charity that's starting its journey towards becoming more accessible and inclusive and doesn't know where to start, or is worried about asking the wrong questions. Is this worth exploring? If so, should I stick to the Heritage sector that I know best? #Inclusion #Disability #Networking #Accessibility #Charity

We're proud to feature Go Live Theatre Projects (GLTP) for this month's Story of Impact. GLTPuses the power of theatre to create inspiring experiences and unlock possibilities for disadvantaged families and young people with SEND. IICF’s 2024 grant has allowed GLTP to deliver a 12-week creative drama project at a Youth Organisation in Westminster for young people aged 11-25 with mild to moderate learning disabilities and often from economically deprived backgrounds. What did participants experience? - 1. Greater confidence to contribute and try something new. 2. Improved wellbeing by taking part in a fun, creative and group activity. 3. Greater ability to express themselves creatively and develop their social skills. “A was so confident and excited to devise her own character from the sorting hat exercise. She had ideas right away and directed the group! We have never seen her do this before or be so quick to jump up and put herself in the spotlight to perform (…) We all found ourselves in awe and wonder at her taking centre stage and were really proud for her to have this moment to shine.” – Lead practitioner To learn more about the charity, visit https://lnkd.in/den8B3s9 About IICF The UK has one of the poorest rates of social mobility in the developed world. We’re working to change this by uniting the industry in volunteering, leadership, and grants to social mobility charities. In the UK, we’ve raised nearly £2M to change the lives of more than 7,200 people in the communities in which we live and work.
