Here’s how we gained +6,000 followers for University of Silicon Valley with just one social media move! 👇 My contribution to the Cathartic Dragon campaign was proposing a unique social media strategy to tap into USV’s gaming and animation-focused audience: a hidden Easter egg hunt within the campaign video. 🐉✨ We created an interactive competition on social platforms, challenging students to find all the gaming Easter eggs, with a VR headset as the prize for the ultimate spotter! 🎮🥽 The impact? Over 6,000 new followers for USV! 🌟 This campaign showcased how repurposing content and focusing on what truly engages your audience can drive organic growth. Sometimes, the smartest moves are all about using what you already have in the right way. How to Survive (and Thrive) in the Museum World 🏛️ Working in a museum can be one of the most rewarding careers—surrounded by history, art, and culture daily. But let’s be real: it’s not always easy! Whether you’re navigating tight budgets, juggling multiple roles, or ensuring artifacts (and visitors!) are safe, the museum world requires passion, resilience, and a sense of humor. Here are a few survival tips I’ve learned along the way: 1️⃣ Stay Curious: Whether you're handling 18th-century artifacts or planning a modern exhibit, learning never stops. Dive into new research, tech, or ideas—you’ll never get bored! 2️⃣ Be a Team Player: Museums thrive on collaboration. Conservators, educators, curators, and front-line staff all bring something unique to the table. Celebrate that. 3️⃣ Adaptability is Key: From last-minute exhibition changes to power outages during an event (it happens!), flexibility is your superpower. 4️⃣ Celebrate the Small Wins: Sometimes, it’s the little things—like an enthusiastic visitor or a successful school program—that remind you why you’re here. And most importantly: 5️⃣ Remember the Mission: Every tough day is worth it when you think about the lives you’re inspiring and the history you’re preserving for future generations.🌟

Have you ever stopped to think about what led you to the AV industry? I certainly never imagined myself here. Yet, here I am, 6.5 years in, and the AV industry has become a significant part of my life. What's your story? Back in 2017, I was invited to InfoComm to get a glimpse of what the AV industry was all about, and you know what? I loved it. I thought, why not work in this industry and see where it takes me? And here I am, still going strong after 6.5 years. I often get asked about my journey during meetings and business lunches. People are curious. What they may not know is that I was a linguist for a while, and before that, a high school teacher overseas. I spoke multiple languages—Arabic, Spanish, and Russian. While my fluency may have faded, it was a defining part of my life at one point. Did I enjoy what I was doing? Absolutely. I think I love everything I do, as long as I find inspiration in it. Of course, there were challenges and restrictions, but nothing is perfect. So, do I like working in the AV industry? I do. It took some time to grow on me, but now it's a part of me, and AVidea is my "baby." Our team is great. We’re not a big company, but that allows us to really know each other much better. Yes, some people come and go, but the people we truly value have been with us for a long time. I've met so many incredible people along the way, and I truly value the partnerships—and even friendships—that have developed. HE Industry Week! We would like to highlight the recent guest talk by Jordan Smee, a valued alumnus of University Centre South Essex and currently a Senior Technical Artist at Climax Studios. Events like this are instrumental in maintaining strong connections with our alumni and creating invaluable opportunities for current students to engage with industry professionals who have walked in their shoes. Jordan’s talk covered a comprehensive range of topics, offering students real insight into the skills, experience, and knowledge needed to succeed in their course and future careers. Some key highlights included: The importance of industry events and competitions like Search for a Star and The Rookies to bridge the gap between education and employment. Practical advice on technical abilities such as lightmap optimisation and storytelling through game environments. The value of resilience and persistence, exemplified by Jordan’s journey of applying for over 100 jobs before landing his first industry role. Tips on portfolio creation, emphasising relevance, clarity, and showcasing technical abilities effectively.

One of my favorite things to do on long-haul flights is to dive into the in-flight entertainment system and watch films from around the world - specifically those outside of the typical American or European cinema. There’s something uniquely exciting about serendipitously discovering a film from a country or culture I know little about, with no preconceived notions, just letting the journey unfold. What I’ve come to appreciate is how films can be windows into different ways of telling stories. Each narrative offers a little glimpse into what matters to a particular society - whether it's family dynamics, gender roles, religion, or societal pressures. The storytelling techniques vary widely, from pacing to visual style, even in how conflicts are resolved. It’s fascinating to see how universal themes are approached from different perspectives. As a people researcher, I see this as an incredible opportunity to broaden my understanding of cultural nuances. It’s like an exercise in expanding cultural fluency - by experiencing these diverse worldviews firsthand. The beauty of this approach is that it’s a low-barrier way to actively practice empathy and gain insight into how we, as global citizens, live, think, and relate to one another. The stories we choose to tell - and the way we tell them - hold up a mirror to our societies, reflecting our values, challenges, and triumphs. This kind of cultural exploration is not only enriching on a personal level but - as I dare to hope - also helps me be more effective in understanding and connecting with people from all walks of life, wherever they are. So, next time you're flying, try clicking past the typical blockbusters and see what hidden gems you can find.
