The Director is not the only filmmaker on a movie. Every human cast and crew member is also a filmmaker for the sake of that movie. Producers are filmmakers. Executive Producers are filmmakers. Investors are filmmakers. Sponsors are filmmakers. Backers and lenders are filmmakers. Each person has a story to tell, a contribution to the “making”. Filmmaking is a very de-centralized art form, requiring many humans to contribute their “verse” (to borrow loosely from Dead Poet’s Society). This is what makes it a special kind of art. It’s the humans that make it so.

Someone on Reddit got their short film into Cannes. Amazing. Then a few years later, they feel lost trying to pitch outlines and short film ideas to producers: https://lnkd.in/gEwFGu5q Here's the hard truth: shorts are a beautiful art form, but they are not a professional product. You can't sell a short film. That is not a thing people are willing to pay to see, so there is no market for them. You need to write feature-length screenplays. Outlines don't count. Ideas don't count. The only thing that is of interest to people like me who can actually help you get a movie made is a feature-length screenplay. That is where it all starts. You need to write a feature screenplay. Finish it. Then, write another. Finish it. Then, write another. Finish it. Keep writing. That is what counts. Screenplays are the hardest thing to come by. If you primarily want to direct, then you are still in the position of needing to find a finished screenplay you can attach yourself to, or find a writer to develop a screenplay with. That is the gauntlet. That is the rubicon you must cross. The good news is we're on the other side waiting for you.
