Are the sunglasses you wear important? Keeping it light and fun today. 😎 I was intrigued by a post Ashley Beck Cuellar made talking about her sunglasses and how much people loved them. I’ve noticed before, some people really love their sunglasses but also specific brands. Sunglasses are the only thing I lose often to misplacing or just beating them up. The criteria for me is simple. Black. Oversized. Helps me see in sunshine. She also mentioned brands should be on top of linked in promoting themselves and to that I say…. I finally watched The Black Beauty Effect on Netflix and wow was it eye-opening. ✨ The docuseries follows the evolution of Black beauty in makeup, skincare, and hair while also celebrating the stories of those who transformed the industry. While there has been a history of exclusion of Black consumers from the beauty space, the docuseries showcases our impact and influence on beauty trends. Giants like Sam Fine, Mikki Taylor, Kahlana Barfield Brown, Jackie Aina, Carol's Daughter, and Pat McGrath Labs were all among some of those mentioned. The Lip Bar's success story and the way the company made lemonade out of lemons really stood out to me. ✨ Melissa Butler, began creating colorful lipsticks while working on Wall Street because she understood that the idea of beauty isn't "linear." After being cruelly denied on Shark Tank, the publicity of that interaction led to major publications picking up her story. Through consistency and a cold email pitch to Target, her products ended up on Target.com. Today, The Lip Bar is a staple beauty brand in Target stores, has expanded its product line to include complexion products, and opened a flagship store in Detroit. ✨ Melissa's success is a testament to understanding that just because your product is not for everyone doesn't mean that the market doesn't exist. I would argue that the Shark Tank rejection was just redirection for The Lip Bar. A redirection to new opportunities, new ideas, and new heights. This lesson of using critique to further drive your passion can be applied to your own personal or professional journey, as you never know when your "big break" is coming. 100% Agreed. From my perspective: Charli xcx’s “brat” summer is the perfect antithesis to the “clean girl” aesthetic trend of last year, where 16-step skincare routines and quiet luxury codes drew our attention to self improvement and perfectionism. The pendulum is inevitably swinging (as it does) to the slightly more relatable & spontaneous side of messy hair or makeup from dancing all night with your friends, overindulgence and unhinged behaviour (for reference, see Julia Fox as the protagonist it-girl in the music video for “360” and Addison Rae’s scream on “Von Dutch”). The point is, right at the moment when pop culture’s identity crisis starts kicking in, Charli strikes masterfully with a simple, punchy 4-letter word in Arial Narrow on a neon green background to depict an era & attitude that resonates across demographics. Another genius move in my opinion was launching the www.bratgenerator.com tool (took me right back to the font generator days on my old Blackberry) where she’s put the brand assets in the hands of the consumer. The simple, striking visual elements retain promotional integrity, while the free open source format pushes the album’s theme of cheekiness and self-expression. Charli xcx turned blurry lowercase text over a bright green background into the best branding moment of 2024, in my opinion. The British popstar drew a lot of flack for the overly simple BRAT album cover when it was first unveiled. But she had the last laugh - it feels like (at least in my overly non-hetero-skewing circles) BRAT green is to summer 2024 what Barbie pink was to summer 2023. And to boot, the album is one of the best-reviewed of the year, and her rollout has been impeccable. That’s Charli baby!
