Getting a VO agent is technical, and getting the right one, is vital. Many of todays VO agents or managers or both …lines are blurred there, but many are mediocre, and hate to say it, many of em will over saturate their roster, and you end up not booking, not being cultivated as a Voice actor, not working, no good. And some, especially some very high profile VO management firms, engage in questionable VO talent engagement practices. I consider them shady like if there were a retail company that sold lamp shades, they would be head lamp shade salesman. So shady that when you ask them “what’s your hobby on Sunny 🌞 days”? Their reply would be “I sit in the Shade on Sunny days” 😵💫😵💫🤮oh and my name is “slim shady” 🤪🥴 Case n pt, I spoke just the other day to a very accomplished Union Voice Actor based in Southern California. This persons agent relationship solid. She books a lot of Union VO work. But she branched out to another VO manager type of guy. I consider him a border line loan shark, but in this case, you pay him and he gives you zero talent representation value in return 😵💫😬🤮 She wanted to dive into a certain VO catagory that her amazing effective agent just didn’t work in. So this very talented VO actor signed on with this so called VO manager loan shark who specializes in this area and has for many years. At this point, he’s trading off his years of agenting success to a new modern talent representation buisness model. It’s called “You pay me cause I’m famous, I pretend to give you something but you really get nothing, and I tell you to be patient so I can rack up some retainer payments before you smarten up and cancel” 🥱🥱🥱😬oh my Lord thank gosh I’m around and know all these characters and yes THEY know me This guy out of the box charged this very talented voice actor a monthly retainer. For 3 yrs he was paid, the loan shark, and he didn’t do $(;/ to create not even 1 booking, in fact he didn’t even get off his @$$, only to cash the VO actors monthly retainer payments to this mgr loan shark. He never really helped market for this VO person, just sat on his fat ass taking this VO actors money monthly , doing zero to earn it. After 3 yrs the VO person stopped paying, moved on. And this particular manager is highly regarded in our industry. I know him well, if your hearing me, dude you owe this VO person everything you took monthly from her, you did nothing to deserve anything. Any time brother you wanna discuss loanshark mgr shady time lamp shade salesman , dm me Any VO actor paying a manager a monthly retainer, just for the good graces of being on a VO roster - that situation needs to be monitored intently You have ? dm me #vo
