Did Spotify's Discover Weekly betray your taste too? I've been a loyal Spotify Premium subscriber for over 10 years now. The Discover Weekly feature used to be the highlight of my Mondays. Each week, I'd get 30 amazing new song recommendations that I eagerly added to my library. But the last few weeks, my Discover Weekly has taken a nosedive. The songs are missing the mark and not aligned with my taste. I'm wondering if there have been some recent changes to Spotify's recommendation algorithms. It's disappointing enough that I'm considering switching to Apple Music after all this time. Although my wife thinks I shouldn't give up on a decade-long relationship with Spotify so easily! I'm curious if other long-time Spotify users have recently experienced a similar drop in Discover Weekly quality recently? So many musicians have been duped into measuring their “success” (and have even tied their emotions to) the number of listens they get per month on major streaming platforms. Because of this, they feel the need to try so many different things to get that listens count UP. That’s exhausting. What does it get you? Not much. Case in point. My band has booked a tour this year at some absolute dream venues. We don’t have that many monthly listeners on Spotify, it’s a metric that didn’t matter. The art is at the center of what we do, and it’s clear we care about doing something the fans will love, and that matters. Our fan base may not be massive, but they are engaged. They care about what we are doing, and we care about how they experience our art. Music is much more about connection then metrics. We as artists should chase connection with the people who DO love our music. That’s what it’s about. Endlessly chasing vanity metrics will just deplete our joy of creating the art. Keep going.

**Reminder to Self: Binge play more Oasis and do not play Espresso today** Comedy as always from Rob Mayhew and his reminder highlights a great differentiator of Spotify. While some drag them for the algorithm faux-shuffling songs, Spotify is the streaming leader (~650M MAUs - wow!) through a relentless product improvement and content expansion (e.g. Podcasts, Baby Classical) and (drum roll) creating a brand that has a deep connection to users real lives...great activations and shows at SXSW come to mind for me. A part of that (over)delivery for the user, Spotify Wrapped is an absolutely iconic brand expression. It's an ownable moment well beyond "National _____ Day" that puts its users as the star, the music (and associated vibes) as the medium, and Spotify as the canvas...expanding the celebration with custom music video compilations, shareable lists, saveable playlists and AURA weaponized what could be a personal "that's interesting" passing thought into a moment of self-reflection and identity exploration...all built on Spotify. The Drake vs. Kendrick rap feud has ignited new opportunities for creators and rejuvenated stagnant businesses. Kendrick's Spotify streams soared to 18M monthly listeners. This is a controversial take but...we need to stop crying about Spotify. There are 11 million artists on Spotify. Only 20,000 artists made $50,000 or more Which represents %0.018 of all artists on the platform. This most likely represents you if you're an artist. Nevertheless, I am not advocate of trying to be a broke artist. Both you and I need approach our brand as a business. Your favorite Billboard charting musician is and you should to. The question is how can you monetize your brand? There many ways and these are some of them: 🟥Touring & live performances. 🟥Merchandising. 🟥Brand memberships for fans. 🟥Speaking. 🟥Sync and & licensing. 🟥Brand deals. Don't limit yourself thinking that you are a sell out to your art. If you're good enough and you build a sizable brand there will be a market for you to execute on these things outside the studio. It's time for all of us to grow and maximize the things that music can bring to us. You'll make a dollar faster and have it in your bank account than on Spotify. #musicians #musicproducer #musicsupervisor #musicbusiness
