Part Science, Part Luck… As A Breckenridge Local I Must Say That The Drum Drop Is One The Coolest Fundraiser Concepts - For the uninitiated, here’s how it works: Summit County Rotary Club hauls a giant drum to the middle of Lake Dillon every year. Attached to the said drum are timing devices. When the ice gives way, the timing devices stop working underwater. Astute guessers use a mixture of past drop times, complex mathematical algorithms and pure luck to predict the exact time the clock will drop. Apra Indiana is holding their spring conference on Thursday, May 2nd, 2024, at the Indiana Historical Society in Indianapolis, Indiana. The event will go from 8:30am – 3:30pm Eastern Time. This conference is an in-person event, so there will be time to network, enjoy food and beverages from a local catering company, and learn more about the world of prospect research. Our keynote speaker, Teresa Goddard, Director of Development Services at DePauw University, will be presenting on the topic of how prospect research informs the entire advancement operation. She is a charter member of the Association of Advancement Services Professionals and currently serves on the Board of Directors as Treasurer. In 2013, she received one of the first certifications in fundraising operations from Rice University. She earned her BS in management information systems from Indiana State University. In addition to hearing Teresa speak, we will have Chris Weimer, Director of Corporate Development from the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis, speaking on prospecting without a natural constituency. Most nonprofit institutions do now have the benefit of refreshing their donor pipeline with tens of thousands of grateful donors year after year. While universities enjoy this benefit on a large scale, not all schools are created equal and beneath the surface lie several critical programs, divisions, and offices with little to no traditional alumni base to prospect from. This discussion will explore how to build a donor pipeline where no obvious constituency exists. To wrap up the day, we will have Clarissa Tester, Associate Director of Corporate Relations at Indiana University and Josh Moore, Director of Foundation Relations at Indiana University, speaking on prospect research in the corporate and foundation sector. The presentation will detail the different types of foundations and corporate giving arrangements along with their various types of contributions (grants, gifts, sponsorships, and more) to nonprofit organizations. It will review helpful sources of information for identifying prospects aligned to an organization and/or project. Finally, it will briefly review best practices for proposal writing and stewardship of organizational funders. I would love to see you there! Back when I (Sam) was running the Armed Services Arts Partnership (ASAP), I never knew how to talk about Memorial Day. Should I be solemn and reflective to honor the dead, or celebratory to honor the fact we’re still alive? In reality, there was no right answer. Memorial Day Weekend can be a time of solemn remembrance for some, a time to celebrate the unofficial start of summer for others, or a time of solemn remembrance and summer celebration for others still. For this week’s newsletter, we fall squarely in that last camp. We start by sharing a moving reflection on Memorial Day, and then explore three features on the intersection of summer, community, and connection: - Memorial Day: What do we owe those who have perished in our generation’s mismanaged wars? - Summer Violence Interruption: How can communities create social outlets to prevent spikes in violence during the summer months?   - Neighborhood Heat Islands: Why are some neighborhoods up to 20 degrees hotter during the summer compared to others just blocks away? - American Exchange Project: Is a summertime domestic exchange program for high school students the key to facilitating connection across geographic difference? Why we do #humansofreno in their own words reporting At Our Town Reno, one of our foundational inspirations in journalism is Studs Terkel, who died in 2008 at the age of 96 in Chicago where he did most of his work, after an illustrious career. He’s best remembered for oral histories of common Americans, including Hard Times: An Oral History of the Great Depression. "For Studs, there was not a voice that should not be heard, a story that could not be told," Gary T. Johnson, the president of the Chicago History Museum is quoted as saying. "He believed that everyone had the right to be heard and had something important to say. He was there to listen, to chronicle, and to make sure their stories are remembered." That’s part of what we are trying to do here at Our Town Reno, person by person, whether they are hard on their luck or a local business person, documenting a tapestry of the Biggest Little City. What makes Reno Reno are the people who live here, who stay here, whose fate has sent them here between the river and the surrounding mountains, trying to survive, and also those who make it a special place and try to change it for the better.
