❓ So many suggestions on how to read a scientific article once you've made it past the Abstract. 🗣 "Start with tables and figures!", "no, the Discussion will tell you if the paper is worth reading!", "wrong, Materials and methods should go first!"... 🔝 The Introduction is not a popular recommendation. Especially if the article is within your own area of expertise, I see why many would choose to ignore it. 📚 But here are my 2 cents: start from the last paragraph of the Introduction. In there, the authors state the scope of their work, they summarize key findings, and how they achieved them. ❗And this is why I read the last paragraph of the introduction first.

You Asked and We Listened: New Deadline for Full Manuscript Submission for the 13th ICCP - October 15, 2023. In response to the growing interest and participation in the 13th International Conference on Concrete Pavements, we are pleased to announce a revised deadline for full manuscript submission. The new deadline for manuscript submission is October 15, 2023. The #conference, scheduled to take place in #Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA, from August 25 to 29, 2024, will focus on the theme of “Innovative Paths Toward Lower Carbon in #Concrete #Pavements.” Manuscript Guidelines: Research Significance: Manuscripts must clearly address the significance of the work to researchers and/or practitioners. This can be achieved either in the abstract, introduction, or in a separate section dedicated to “Research Significance.” Emphasizing the practical and academic relevance of your research is essential. Manuscript Length: Manuscripts should adhere to a maximum length of 7,500 words. This word count should include figures and tables, with each figure and table counted as 250-word equivalents. Keeping your manuscript concise and within these limits will ensure that your research is presented effectively while allowing for a comprehensive understanding of your work. The complete set of guidelines for the manuscript can be found here: https://lnkd.in/g-3K4jax We encourage all authors to submit their full manuscripts by the revised deadline to be considered for presentation at the 13th International Conference on Concrete Pavements. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to the advancement of knowledge in the field and engage with fellow experts in discussions surrounding innovative approaches to reducing carbon emissions in #concrete #pavements. For more information about the 13th ICCP, please visit the conference website: https://lnkd.in/eXAM8W7E We look forward to receiving your contributions and to welcoming you to Minneapolis in August 2024 for what promises to be an exciting and informative event.

Midway on the fifth and the hardest one to chew (almost equivalent to Popperian politico-philosophical expositions but in science) - you only need to read a few pages to get a sense of what I’m talking about. If there are only six books to read this year, I’ll bet these are the ones. With a variety of flavour too - the best of science (Deutsch - the difficult one), the practical one (Millerd), emotional escapade of the deepest type (Joan Didion), psycho-spiritual insights and of course the nerdy one (Tim Urban- the top of the lot). Interestingly, all available free online (pdf, epub etc) except Tim Urban (told you, he’s the top of the lot😄). So read along!!

Sometimes complete strangers enter our lives, asking for help with their research. I always say "YES" and give what I can. In exchange for my time or my ideas, I only ask for continued dialogue and updates on their findings. Today, I found one of those YES' in the form of a lovely Thesis paper, by Mae Alderliesten. an interesting read about the role of Haptic Senses and Materiality:
