Getting feedback from professionals on your portfolio is super helpful, especially with how competitive things are right now. One thing you can control as a designer is how much you invest in and showcase your work. Design expert and professor Rebeccah Pailes-Friedman mentioned at the recent Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA) Portfolio Review that she loves seeing not just the final renders, but also the process behind them. What do you all think about this, whether you’re building your portfolio or hiring?
Industrial Designer, Artist & Educator - Founder, Interwoven Design Group, Professor, Industrial Design, Pratt Institute, Artist, RPF Studio
While I was at the International Design conference by Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA) in Austin TX, last week I got to sit down with a few students and review their portfolios. I saw some great work and was excited to see that so many were interested in soft goods and textiles. In general, I saw lots of great CAD renders for student's concept products but I wanted to see more process images. When I'm interviewing to hire new designers Interwoven Design Group, I want to see how a candidate solves problems - not just the finished product. After all, I'm hiring designers for how they think, how they solve future problems and design future products. Having process images that show how you solve design problems in invaluable in your portfolio.

Each factory has its own unique strengths. As designers and developers, it's crucial to understand these differences. Our job isn't just about picking the right factory, but also about effectively communicating design details, pushing technical limits, and ensuring that specific styles come to life in 3D. #factories #shoedesign #shoedevelopment

A significant sign that the technical team needs to enhance their skills is when reports become unnecessarily long and cumbersome. Here are a few key areas where we can improve: 1.Redundancy: For example, revised specs, which are already indicated in the spec sheet, are often repeated spec by spec in fitting comments. This redundancy wastes time for both the sample room and QC teams or whoever need to follow up next, as they go through information they already have. 2.Precision Over Detail: While attention to detail is important, we sometimes go overboard. For instance, comments like "there are 2 loose stitches 3 inches below the armhole" may not always be necessary. We need to focus on providing concise and actionable feedback that addresses the most significant issues. 3.Clear Pattern Corrections: Instead of pointing out multiple problems without clear solutions, the reports should include accurate sketches for the sample room to follow. This will help achieve the right fit more efficiently. When sketches are provided, they need to be practical and feasible, not just conceptual. 4.Effective Communication: When the sample room questions the feasibility of a sketch, the response should NOT be, "This shows what we want; it's the pattern maker's responsibility to figure out how to achieve it." Instead, the technical team should be accountable for the corrections they provide and work collaboratively to find solutions. A good report should: 1.Avoid Repetition: This saves time for the people who need to follow up next 2.Provide Clear, Actionable Solutions: Precisely identify issues and offer accountable pattern corrections in sketch form to quickly rectify fitting problems. 3.Prioritize Significant Issues: Focus on the most important flaws rather than minor ones that require a magnifying glass to see. Consider the photo as a small test. How many corrections are required to make the right side fit ( front is hiking, neckline is falling back, armhole is off, sideseam is going forward) like the balanced fit on the left side? It only requires adjusting the dart values. With a simple, clear sketch, the sample room can quickly make the next fit right. By focusing on key areas, we can streamline our processes, improve communication, and foster a more efficient and effective workflow. This not only benefits our internal teams but also strengthens our overall production quality. #TechnicalDesign, #FashionIndustry, #ApparelDesign, #PatternMaking, #QualityControl, #ProductDevelopment, #FashionTech, #GarmentConstruction, #FashionProduction, #Efficiency, #ProcessImprovement, #TeamCommunication, #SampleRoom, #FittingIssues, #FashionManufacturing, #TechnicalSkills, #FashionInnovation

If you're a Product Designer, you know the importance of having a manufacturing designer who can execute your vision just the way you dreamed it, drew it or imagined it. You may be considering rotational moulding if: -Your design is complex or has a hollow core. Rotational moulding is ideal for creating parts with intricate shapes or voids that would be difficult or expensive to produce using other methods. -Your product needs to be durable. Rotationally moulded parts are known for their strength, impact resistance, and UV stability. -You require a high degree of design freedom (of course). Rotational moulding can be used to create parts in a wide range of shapes, sizes, and colours. If any of these considerations apply to your product, then rotational moulding could be a great option for you.
