Europe is losing the AI arms race - as it did in internet search, social media and cloud computing! 🇪🇺 🇪🇺 According to a recent article in the Financial Times AI startups grow even faster than Software-as-a-Service companies 🇪🇺 AI startups hit the $30mn in annualized revenue milestone in 20 months, or 5x faster than previous SaaS companies! 🇺🇸 And most of them are US companies (while Europe is watching from the sidelines and thinking about onerous regulations) 🇪🇺 The rule of the AI race is simple: either be part of the race or be left watching from the sidelines. This already happened multiple times before in internet search, cloud computing, and social media. Europe has to wake up and join the AI race! #ai #race #europe #startups Marcel Salathé Daniela Suter, PhD Armando Geller Dr. Claudia V. Brunner Paola Valencia Jakob Bosshard

Chief Commercial Officer, Mayfield | Empowering Entrepreneurs to Scale Successful Ventures | Accelerating Product-Market Fit and Early Customer Adoption | Connecting CIOs, CTOs, and CXOs to Drive Corporate Innovation
"We believe the foundation model layer for LLMs is a difficult area for new startups and is overfunded now and dominated by well-funded companies and cloud providers." #AI has dominated the headlines over the past couple of years and for good reason. However, some trends are just oversaturated. Check out Navin's perspective on which ones Mayfield is prioritizing right now at the link below: #Innovation #DigitalTransformation #ITLeadership

A lens into the future of AI and Cloud: Bessemer Venture Partners' post on The Cloud 100 Benchmarks Report 2024 is a nice deep dive. Full report link in the comments. Thanks for sharing Allen Djal 👨🏼🚀 If you get through the article, would love to hear everyone else's thoughts. My observations: 1. AI's Rapid Ascent: The sheer pace at which AI companies are scaling — reaching $100M ARR faster than any previous cohort — shows just how critical AI has become to the modern business ecosystem. 2. Valuations Reflect Strategic Growth: Despite market uncertainties, the 25% year-over-year increase in Cloud 100 valuations underscores how companies that focus on sustainable, strategic growth are thriving. 3. AI’s Long-Term Impact: With AI now the most valuable category in the Cloud 100, it’s clear that the future of cloud computing will be inextricably linked with AI innovation. 4. Yay VAST Data! 🚀 Ranked #47, I'm excited to be part of a team building a new category of data infrastructure—one of the most advanced data management systems designed to revolutionize how organizations handle large and complex datasets, particularly in AI and ML. #AI, #CloudComputing, #Startups, #Leaders, #Innovation, #Future

Check out some of these stats: 🤖 86% of organizations have seen a notable increase in the demand for data and analytics expertise. 🤖 89% of data leaders expect a reduction in full-time hours. 🤖 92% of respondents are utilizing cloud data warehouses across multiple business functions. What's spurring these changes? GenAI. This incredible tool has changed the way IT professionals operate, and it's not an overstatement to say those startups that support their IT departments in adopting it will experience significant advantages over those that do not. What has been the biggest change you've seen since the rise of GenAI? https://bit.ly/3ItFpzK #GenerativeAI #GenAI #AI #Startups

Here is an insightful analysis by Maxime Le Dantec from Resonance showcasing the AI startup ecosystem in France, but one critical element is still missing if we really want to have AI ecosystem: INFRASTRUCTURE 🏗 ! In recent conversations with many of the generative AI startups on the list, one fact stood out—almost all are running their solutions on AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, Cloudweave, LambdaLabs... ☁ US cloud providers . Collectively, French startups in the generative AI space raised $2.29 billion in the first half of 2024 (as reported by TechCrunch). Given how resource-intensive AI is, especially compared to traditional tech, it's likely that 30% to 50% of this funding is going straight to US cloud services, and indirectly to NVIDIA. This is not a new problem—French tech has relied on US cloud providers for over a decade, and at Streamroot it was the same. However, AI introduces a new paradigm: we now need GPU infrastructure, not CPU. We've already lost the CPU cloud battle, but there’s still time to build serious competitors in the GPU space. Scaleway, driven by Xavier Niel and Damien Lucas, is a hopeful contender, but the EU pace of investment is far too slow. The lack of strategic focus on GPU and cloud infrastructure will leave Europe behind despite the innovation happening in AI startups. Today is the internet moment of the 2000s for AI. We must ensure this generation of amazing startups leverages European infrastructure. Let’s not miss the opportunity. If you’re interested in this topic, feel free to reach out. #cloudAi #GenAI #Funding #FrenchTech #Infrastructure

Co-Founder @ Calibrtr | B2B SaaS AI cost optimisation | AI, Cyber, Policy | GSEC GFACT | Helping companies drop their AI spend
Can #generativeAI costs destroy a Unicorn startup? Reading a fascinating Forbes article on the downfall of Stability (makers of Stable Diffusion), and while it’s clear that there were a lot of issues around Emad Mostaque’s approach to leadership, his business model was really vulnerable to high AI costs. The key lines for me were: “It was Stability’s armada of GPUs, the wildly powerful and equally expensive chips undergirding AI, that were so taxing the company’s finances. Hosted by AWS, they had long been one of Mostaque’s bragging points; he often touted them as one of the world’s 10 largest supercomputers. […].” But the costs associated with so much compute were now threatening to sink the company. According to an internal October financial forecast seen by Forbes, Stability was on track to spend $99 million on compute in 2023. […] With an additional $54 million allocated to wages and operating expenses, Stability’s total projected costs for 2023 were $153 million. But according to its October financial report, its projected revenue for the calendar year was just $11 million. Stability was on track to lose more money per month than it made in an entire year.” This is a massive scale version of Calibrtr’s problem space. How many more companies will find, particularly when the free credits run out, that their AI compute spend outstrips their revenue? There are fundamental drivers of AI cost, particularly cost of GPUs and energy. But we think we can use our tools to really optimise costs for companies using cloud gen AI through smart prompt engineering, model choice, and monitoring and management. #aicomputecosts #stability #promptengineering

AI valuations are far outpacing other verticals, a sign of a continued willingness to invest—even if it comes at a premium. Cohere, a large language model developer, has reportedly been in talks to raise $450 million at a $5 billion valuation. In April, AI search engine Perplexity raised $62.7 million at a $1.04 billion valuation. And in February, AI cloud computing startup Lambda raised a $320 million Series C at a $1.5 billion valuation.
