May is Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (#AANHPI) month -- a time to celebrate the cultures, traditions and contributions of the #AANHPI community and raise awareness the under-recognized history of Asians, Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders in the US. We look forward to our panel discussion later this month where Freeline team members will share their perspective on cultural identity and belonging as well as implicit and explicit bias.

We recognize Asian American and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month, a time to honor and celebrate the invaluable contributions that generations of Americans from Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander backgrounds made to our nation's history, society and culture. Bayer’s Business Resource Group BASIA (Bayer Asian Society Inclusion Alliance) theme for this year’s #AANHPI celebration is embracing resilience. The American Psychological Association defines resilience as the process and outcome of successfully adapting to challenging life experiences, primarily through mental, emotional, and behavioral flexibility and adjustment to external and internal demands. The American story, a testament to resilience and strength, is intricately woven with the voices and legacies of AANHPI individuals. Their contributions have been instrumental in building and uniting our country. By embracing their resilience, we can draw inspiration to overcome life's challenges and emerge stronger. #TeamBayer

Let’s get back to diversity, and how to best ensure your business effectively manages diverse cultures, religions, belief systems and motivations. Our Winning Strength-from-Diversity Corporate Culture™ approach represents a synergy created through the cross-fertilisation and synthesis of the best characteristics of the various cultures, religions, and ethnicities that are relevant to a particular organisation, and which contribute to its global competitiveness and success – while also identifying less desirable characteristics and minimising their impact. The diagram depicted here illustrates this basic principle. The addition of "Native Hawaiian" in the acronym AANHPI brings a more inclusive and precise recognition of these diverse communities. Anthropological research reveals fascinating insights into how different cultures express positivity and appreciation. While a smile is nearly universally recognized as a positive gesture, other forms of engagement vary widely. In some Asian cultures, indirect compliments are preferred to avoid causing embarrassment, while many Mediterranean cultures value effusive, direct praise. Some African tribes use elaborate greeting rituals to show respect and appreciation, while certain Native American cultures emphasize listening as a form of positive engagement. Understanding these cultural nuances not only broadens our perspective but also enhances our ability to connect meaningfully across diverse groups. This cultural intelligence is increasingly vital in our globalized world.
