Today I had the the amazing opportunity to attend The University of Texas at Dallas Career Fair! I learned a lot about the opportunities available to students and the expectations of potential employers. I particularly enjoyed the chance to engage with recruiters and gain a better understanding of what they are looking for in candidates. Some tips I recommend for other incoming UTD JSOM students would be: 1. Have a Resume Ready for Recruiters: A resume can make a strong first impression and set you apart from other candidates. 2. Develop an Elevator Pitch: Prepare a brief but captivating elevator pitch that clearly summarizes who you are, your career goals, and what you bring to the table. 3. Take Notes on Employers: After speaking with recruiters or company representatives, take a few moments to jot down notes about each conversation. Record key details such as the recruiter's name, company information, and any key points for follow-up actions. Overall, the fair was a very valuable opportunity to connect with potential employers and learn more about the professional world.

My pro-tips for next week's Career Fair? 💡 1. Come early when it's quiet and when recruiters are more likely to have energy to talk. 2. If you're actively looking for jobs, do some advanced research and come up with ideas of what might be interesting to talk about. Create space for engaging conversations, and do NOT lead with "Are you hiring?" This will not set you apart from the 1500+ other students attending. Open-ended questions are the way to go. 3. There's no need to suit up or wear heels, but dress smart. The more prepared you look, the more likely an employer can picture you as a future hire. 4. Always leave room for future interaction. Have your LinkedIn profile and/or email address ready to share, but don't be aggressive on the spot about following up. We all have limited bandwidth and recruiters are sure to have countless requests coming to them the day of. Be as respectful and courteous of their time as possible when presenting a request.
