Terrific book. The stories re status anxiety held by famous historical figures are fascinating, and supplement core messages in the book. Status Games spotlights the neurobiology underneath our emotions and feelings. Loretta's work and ideas are worth adding to the cannon of any conflict resolver. Done!
Sigmund Freud's Status Anxiety is explained on pages 52-56 of my book Status Games: Why We Play and How to Stop. Charles Darwin's status anxiety on pp. 17-20. Also Jane Austen, Booker T Washington, Soong Ching-Ling and Alexander Hamilton's Status Anxiety. https://buff.ly/4gl9HEB

Just published this NPR article for all of my fellow diehard fans who are furiously preparing for the release of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. (I don't have any hard data on this, but my guess is that there probably aren't many of you on LinkedIn. No matter, it's my only social account and I like to share when I do things.) In case you weren't aware, the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII offers a whole slew of games, books, and more expanding the lore of the 1997 original classic. I went through all of them and wrote a ranked list, because that's what you do when you work in digital media. There's tons of amazing stuff to explore in the Compilation, so if you're interested, check out my article! I'll also be reviewing Final Fantasy VII Rebirth for NPR, so more to come soon!

When you're a child, you rarely think about the real-life applicability of games. To this day, Monopoly has a nostalgic place in my heart ❤️. Who remembers those Monopoly games that lasted for hours as a child? As exciting and engaging as Monopoly is, there are actually some great financial principles that can be learned. Here are 5 financial principles that can be gleaned from Monopoly [this list is not exhaustive]: 1. Always keep cash on-hand. 2. Be patient. 3. The importance of cash flow. 4. The necessity of investing for long-term wealth. 5. Don't put all your eggs in one basket. What lessons would you add? 🤔 Comment below ⏬️⏬️⏬️

Listen, I love me some video games. RPGs are among my favorite things in the world. And it’s astonishing how good some shows are these days. But these modes of entertainment are also designed to eat up a lot of our time. Auto-cueing up the next episode. Dangling the next quest. (Just like how we know social media is designed to be addictive.) You probably only have so much time to spare, and you were meant to tell your story (not just consume other people’s stories). You need time to write the goddamn thing, so you gotta carve it out. Set limits and alarms on your entertainment. For more advice, grab the free quick-start novel writing guide from my profile.

Online Book Launch Event! 24th January 4pm - 5:30pm (GMT) Join Dr. Seth Giddings and me to discuss 'The Child in Videogames'! We'll kick off with a short reading from the book and an interactive activity, followed by a conversation between Seth and me, and ending with an open Q&A and discount vouchers. Some questions you might want to ask me: 1) Emma, how many swear words are there in your opening chapter alone? 2) Have you ever had a heated argument with someone in a pub about whether Sonic the Hedgehog is a child-type or whether he is a man in his mid-to-late 30s? Did you win this argument? 3) What do you think needs to happen within the games industry in order to bring about a true 'Mummening' to rival the Daddening of the 2010s? All are welcome, including students. https://lnkd.in/e6rbCxNs

Industria Ditat. This means Industry Provides and it's the motto of Widnes, my town of birth. It matters to me as I use it to mean "Hard work pays".
One word answers <sigh> There was a post a couple of days ago along the lines of 'what does the game industry need most? One word answers only.' I replied, "me" which is what I think everyone should have replied with. What the industry needs is more complex and nuanced than a single word can do justice to. Thus the need is for us to be involved to give voice to the words required: to be involved in the development, the discussion and the direction. It needs our intelligence, experience, creativity and resourcefulness. It needs our passion and our compassion, our drive and our empathy. It needs us all with the understanding that play in all it forms, makes us better as human beings. We are at our best when we play. It needs us to be advocates for the games industry, embodying the message that it can be a world changing force for good, and not simply and means to financial profit. When done properly, it is both. One word answers allow venting, or gathering data perhaps or enhances our 'profile' maybe, but I think that they also cheapen the issues we face and collective improvements that all us have a part to play in delivering.
