Associate Professor in AI and Education at The University of Queensland and Co-Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Learning Analytics
Call for papers for a special section on 𝐆𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐀𝐈 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐀𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐲𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐬 The Journal of Learning Analytics (JLA) invites diverse and critical viewpoints, methodologies, and findings at the intersection of Generative AI and learning analytics. 𝐄𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐬 Hassan Khosravi, The University of Queensland, Simon Buckingham Shum, University of Technology Sydney Jelena Jovanovic, University of Belgrade Zachary Pardos, UC Berkeley Lixiang (Jimmie) Yan, Monash University The deployment of Generative AI (GenAI) in education has sparked a vibrant discourse, highlighting a spectrum of opportunities and concerns. Among the positive developments that many have proposed, GenAI promises to offer a more personalised learning experience, 24/7 support for diverse learners to resolve frequently asked questions, partial automation of some tasks to give educators more time with students, and instant, dialogic feedback to learners. For many GenAI is the tipping point to accelerate the transition to more robust assessment practices. There are, of course, also valid concerns. Foremost are concerns about the integrity of conventional assessment in the age of AI if students rely on GenAI to complete assignments, undermining the learning process. There are also issues of hallucinations where GenAI provides factually incorrect outputs as well as a notable lack of transparency in explaining how their outputs are produced. Data privacy is yet another prominent issue, if students are being asked to use AI apps external to their institution, or if insecure language models have access to students’ personal information and learning records. A key strategy in harnessing GenAI’s potential to enrich education while mitigating risks is to incorporate a learning analytics lens to understand how students engage with GenAI-powered tools and to measure the impact of such tools on student learning experience and outcomes. This accentuates the need for robust and rigorous research at the intersection of GenAI and learning analytics. Within the overarching theme of this section, we welcome a variety of submissions, including empirical studies, conceptual or theoretical discussions, and speculative papers. 𝐈𝐌𝐏𝐎𝐑𝐓𝐀𝐍𝐓 𝐃𝐀𝐓𝐄𝐒 Abstract submission: 𝐉𝐮𝐥𝐲 15, 2024 (𝐨𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥) Final paper submission: 𝐀𝐮𝐠𝐮𝐬𝐭 01, 2024 Decisions and comments sent to authors: 𝐒𝐞𝐩𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫 2024 Publication of special section: 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 2025 For more details visit https://lnkd.in/gUDGMDeB #GenAI #LearningAnalytics #EdTech #AIED

Just emerged from a thought-provoking plenary discussion at #OnderwijsFestival at Universiteit Utrecht on the evolving role of generative AI in education. The discussion was moderated by the one and only Bald De Vries and included Karin van Es. Here are some key takeaways that are important for the future of teaching and learning /written on the basis of my notes by Chat GPT/: - Uncertainty as a Tool: Emphasizing the need for guidelines on the 'how' to leverage uncertainty in education through generative AI, rather than questioning its use. - Transparency and Accessibility: The call for open-access tutorials and clear assignment agreements about the learning goals is louder than ever. It's about increasing the skill set of our educators and ensuring that every student has the tools they need to succeed. - Equality in Education: We're facing a pivotal moment where the disparity in access to generative AI tools could widen the gap in educational outcomes. It's crucial to ensure that all students move forward together. - Digital Literacy and Ethics: The integration of digital tools, especially generative AI, in humanities and beyond is reshaping our ethical landscape. Teaching how to use these tools responsibly is now a fundamental skill, alongside traditional XX-century skills. - Starting Point for Literacy in AI: A debate is brewing on whether generative AI education should begin in higher education or be introduced as early as age 4. It's a conversation about foundations and future readiness. - Perception vs. Reality: There's a noticeable gap between our perceptions of AI capabilities and their actual functionalities. Bridging this gap through education is critical. - Rethinking Education: This is about something other than whether to use generative AI in education, but how to do so wisely. It's time for educators to understand the workings of generative AI to craft more relevant teaching methods and assessment forms. - Broad Vision, Beyond Buzzwords: As we embrace generative AI, it's essential to anchor our discussions in learning objectives and values, engaging students in these conversations to shape well-rounded individuals. -Industry Relevance: Mastering generative AI is not just an academic exercise; it's a skill in high demand across industries. Let's not make generative AI just another buzzword. Instead, let's engage in open, meaningful dialogues to harness its potential responsibly, ensuring it enhances our educational landscapes rather than disrupting them in unintended ways. #EducationInnovation #GenerativeAI #DigitalLiteracy #FutureOfEducation #EthicalAI

Just had an insightful conversation with Laura Newey, who has embarked on an exciting journey, leveraging Generative AI to redefine her teaching methods. Her take on educational transformation was genuinely riveting. Laura emphasizes that Generative AI is not about creating plagiarism-enabling tools but fostering innovative ways to nurture and develop critical thinking skills in students, a dire requisite in our rapidly digitizing world. In her approach, students transition from being passive learners to active assessors, analyzing AI-generated results and understanding their input's quality and depth. Recognizing this shift is crucial as it underscores the significance of research and analysis over mere outcome generation. Her forward-thinking methodology might seem alien to those clinging to traditional teaching techniques. But it underscores the urgent necessity to embrace digitalization if we want our students to thrive. This transition can draw parallels with the initial resistance to incorporating the internet as a teaching tool. Generative AI, just like any evolving technology, requires meaningful integration within our education system and regular updates to stay relevant in a rapidly changing landscape. While innovation is empowering, ethical consideration is equally essential. Laura emphasizes striking a balance between embracing AI and ensuring its ethical usage, particularly recounting instances of students submitting AI-generated essays. Drawing from her experience, Laura firmly believes in AI's potential as a valuable educational tool. However, it's upon educators to guide students toward maintaining academic integrity while leveraging this technology. Embracing AI in education might seem challenging but, as Laura showcases, the fruitful integration of such tools can significantly elevate the learning experience, preparing our students for a future molded by digital advancements. #AI #EdTech #Innovation #Ethics #DigitalTransformation. http://ow.ly/XiFE30sz2NS
