Planned Maintenance Where routine maintenance may happen on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis, planned maintenance may be scheduled once per year or as needed. This is because planned maintenance is more time-consuming, expensive, and thorough—often requiring the services of a specialist. In the context of maintaining an air-conditioning unit, routine maintenance is taking out and washing the filters once per month, while planned maintenance is hiring an HVAC professional to check refrigerant levels, possible leaks, and measure airflow through the evaporator coil.

Being a chemical engineer at Hempel A/S also requires being a bit of a detective 🔍 That’s how Mercedes Luna Mateo refers to the work she’s doing for her offshore wind tower coatings project.   At Hempel, we’re relentless in our pursuit of constant improvement. In the area of R&D, this involves scientists, like Mercedes, finding ways to adjust existing solutions to improve performance.   Mercedes’ project focuses on adjusting a coating solution developed for offshore wind towers that are situated in bodies of water, usually at sea. Here, the towers are exposed to the corrosive elements of wind, sun, rain and seawater 🌬 ☀ 🌧 🌊 “The main challenge is to improve the coating’s protective properties while safeguarding the customer’s own specific colour,” says Mercedes.   “We have several wind energy customers, and we work together with them to create their unique Hempel shade. These colours are exclusive to our customers, and we can’t change them because the colour is part of their brand.”   “When we adjust the formula to improve the coating’s protective properties, it’s important to know if the colour changes according to different parameters, such as batch production size. That’s why I went to Hempel’s factory in Barcelona.”   Our Barcelona factory produces the largest quantity of the offshore wind tower coating that Mercedes is working on, and it was important to see how the product looks when produced in large-scale batches.   This was Mercedes’ first visit to a Hempel factory. In addition to providing the facilities needed to test her product, the experience gave Mercedes the opportunity to see first-hand how raw materials end up as a complex product that protects our customers’ valuable assets 🛡 “I was lucky to be surrounded by colleagues who have been working in the factory for a long time,” says Mercedes. “They showed me the process from beginning to end. And, for the first time, I could really picture how our work in R&D relates to the finished product. It was like a puzzle that is now complete.”   “So, when I think about the ‘value’ of the chain, I think about all the colleagues who contribute at every stage of the process. The synergy between the teams - the factory and the lab - is fluid. Big volumes = big problems if you can’t react to changes in your customer demand. We had a situation where we needed to get 4 TL’s a day done to not shut down our customer’s customer. It’s awesome to work with a group of people who immediately figured out how to rework shifts to get the right people on each shift to deliver for our customer. Getting it done is what we do! If your supplier isn’t running 24 hours a day, they can’t respond to your critical needs. If your supplier doesn’t have a private fleet, you have to find a broker who cares about the customer as much as we do. The easiest solution is to just send me a message. Bring your materials in and we will get it to your customer, delivering volume isn’t a problem. There is no red tape, deal with the decision maker and not have the missing man stop you from servicing your customer. I’m still hiring.
