One of the most important things to take into consideration before you start the production of you short film is the location in where it takes place, so here are some insights that will help you to create an exceptional short film: - Choosing fantastic locations adds production value without spending lots of money. It has a big impact on how the film looks and feels for the audience. - For residential properties, Airbnb and VRBO are great platforms. - Focus on locations that you can get for low or no cost, they are one of the areas you can usually save a lot of money. - The best locations are ones that you have full reign over and don’t have to worry about people coming in and out of. - The less travel or company moves you have to do the better. One of the best short films I’ve ever done was shot in a single location. Compared to Hollywood, our country's film industry is not small. However, unlike Hollywood and many other countries, our industry lacks modern resources as well as educated and trained technicians. I believe that many people have the skills, and there are good technicians, but not in sufficient numbers. If someone wants to learn something, they often cannot because there is a long waiting list. In America, many universities have separate courses on film, and interested students can study their favorite subjects related to film there. Perhaps this facility is now available in our country too. There are some books on film available in our country, but they are written in English, and many people cannot read or understand English. 7 years ago, I was somehow able to gather the most talented people I know to work unpaid overnights for a short film that is very near and dear to my heart. Midnight is still the project I am the most proud of, because it was a series of many firsts that all taught me valuable lessons and set me on the path I’m on today. It was the first completely independent project I did, the first time we had to build a set, and the first time I won an audience choice award In the 7 years since we filmed, I’ve learned so much and have discovered so many things. So much so, that I realized everyone’s hard work and talent was being undermined by the shoddy VFX work I did when I didn’t know what I was doing. So, it’s with great excitement that I present Midnight - remastered! I did an entire VFX overhaul, and included a breakdown of the process for anyone who’s interested! It was a great exercise and made me all kinds of nostalgic. It would mean so much if you gave the film a watch. It’s only 12 minutes, but it’s got alot of heart. Yesterday, I watched a movie that felt like a complete waste of time. There was no story, no proper climax....nothing. The only redeeming factor was the visuals, but apart from that, nothing impressed me. As an aspiring filmmaker, my curiosity led me to read reviews of the movie, and I was shocked to discover that it had won awards and was a box office success. How? The entire story could be summarized in just one line. I can say, the logline was the whole movie. If such films are being made and production houses are willing to invest in them, it makes me question the relevance of creative writers in the film industry. !!!¿? Unique stories seem to be discarded. Just write a logline, make a movie out of it, and that's it. Apparently, the audience has the time and money to watch such content. 🙃 I was thinking about that and, now I’ve decided that I will make movies based on my own stories. If these simple, uninspired plots can succeed, I’m confident my stories will perform even better. May or may not be, but atleast I’ll be proud of my work. . . Many writers will agree—––looking at the state of stories in movies these days, it seems like great visuals, audio, and cinematography are enough to carry a film. Any story, no matter how basic, can be turned into a successful movie. That’s all!!! With the audience's attention span already so low, they’re likely to forget the beginning of the movie by the time they reach the final part. 😅 #writing #filmmaking

The Official Movie Poster for my upcoming short film, Vibrations. 🍿🎬🎥 It is a 10 minute silent short film (no dialogue) about a young woman who wakes up to find her early morning haunted by an ominous buzzing noise. The film was written in the Winter months of 2024 as part of the Free Film School’s Writing Programme. I took the programme very seriously as it was an opportunity for me to get back into my writing, and ultimately, my creative groove. We deliberately leaned into the idea of making a low-budget film. The film has one character, takes place in one location, used a Canon 250D starter camera, two lenses, one strong light and practicals, a one-take-wonder etc. We invested a lot of time and energy into the sound design and editing to uplift the production value as much as possible. Writing and directing a film is extremely challenging. Therefore, I am extremely thankful and grateful to my team and all those who motivated and assisted me on this journey. "So, I have some ideas about the script." Those are the words I heard last night from my friend Gary who is going to be the Director of Photography (DP) and head of the technical side of the new short film we're working on. I heard them and immediately tensed up. I'm the screenwriter, the storyteller, the visionary. I'm the creator and keeper of the words, motivations, and actions. Gary's sphere is the technical side on this project. He should stay in his lane and I'll handle mine. WOW! What and idiot I was being! Gary has worked on way more films than I have, (for the record, I have worked on 1 to date) and is a really smart guy. He was offering his ideas and after my initial kneejerk reaction I relaxed a little and listened. And...not surprisingly he had some great ideas that we immediately agreed to implement into the story and screenplay. I had made a classic mistake and fallen in love with my script and thought anyone trying to change it was wrong. Nope. I was wrong and it's a constant battle to stay open to feedback when people offer ideas or critiques on your work. I'm used to being a playwright where you write the script, send it off to the publisher and changes aren't allowed without a very formal process. In film, it's a much more fluid and collaborative experience where the writer's final copy is more like a draft/guidelines/suggestions for the director and the cast. It's a different world, and if I don't keep my mind open and collaborative our film won't leverage all the talented people that will work on it. (Notice I said "our film"?) Keep your mind open to feedback. It will make you and the final product better. #OpenMindedCreatives
