Some school nurses and other education officials in Tennessee say a new law requiring parental consent before rendering medical or psychological treatment to students has left them scratching their heads in need of clarity. The new Families' Rights and Responsibilities Act bars government entities or healthcare providers from treating, operating on, diagnosing, offering prescriptions or rendering psychological counseling to children without first obtaining parental consent, except in emergency situations."A violation of this practice is an unlawful practice and is grounds for the offending healthcare provider's licensing authority to suspend, revoke, or refuse to renew the healthcare provider's license or take other disciplinary action allowed by law," the law's text reads. The measure went into effect in July, just in time for the start of the 2024-2025 school year, leading some nurses to wonder to what extent they can tend to students in non-emergency situations without facing consequences.TENNESSEE GOV. BILL LEE EXPECTS A SCHOOL CHOICE ‘REVOLUTION,' WITH PARENTAL RIGHTS A KEY 2024 ELECTION ISSUE According to local reports, nurses are concerned that the definition of an "emergency" situation is not clearly defined. (BSIP/Universal Images Group via Getty Images)"School nurses in particular – they weren't consulted on this," JC Bowman, CEO of the Professional Educators of Tennessee, told Fox News Digital on Wednesday. In his capacity, Bowman represents and interacts with nurses, teachers, and other members of the education community across the Volunteer State. He believes there are good components of the bill, but some areas need work."There's a nursing shortage right now, and a couple of nurses that I have talked to… one of the things that they were telling me is, ‘Look I can go right over to HCA and make $100,000. One of them actually left and went to the VA is making like $116,000, and she said ’I'm not doing this anymore' ," he said."But they come in and become school nurses, and they love the kids. They love the reason for doing it and coming there, but what you're going to see, I think, is the trickle-down effect, where nurses and particular guidance counselors as well, even teachers, are going to start walking away from the field because they don't want to make a mistake… they don't want to inadvertently do somethi

Teaching Assistants: Sign the Petition for a School Nurse in Every School Are you a teaching assistant feeling overwhelmed by healthcare responsibilities? Join the fight for better support for our children! The School and Public Health Nurses Association (SAPHNA) is urging teaching assistants to sign a petition calling on the government to provide a school nurse in every school. Why is this important? - Overburdened TAs: Many TAs are being diverted from their essential roles to cover for the lack of school nurses. - Worsening children's health: Obesity, dental decay, and mental health issues are on the rise. - International comparison: Other countries have a higher ratio of school nurses to pupils. The IHPE strongly supports this campaign. - School nurses are vital members of the school team, providing essential health care support. - TAs can focus on their core roles of supporting teachers and pupils when school nurses are present. Let's make a difference! - Sign the petition: - Share this post to raise awareness. Together, we can ensure that every child has access to the healthcare they deserve. #SchoolNurse #TeachingAssistant #Education #PublicHealth #ChildrensHealth #Advocacy

**Looking for a PMHNP Preceptor in or around Chester County PA, let’s connect!** Providing holistic child-centered care of mind and body in the school setting.
It is essential to recognize school nurses as integral members of the educational landscape. Students already perceive them as vital contributors and a reliable source of support within the school environment. School nurses are privy to the diverse needs, wishes, and sensitive information shared by students who trust in their discretion and commitment to student welfare. These healthcare professionals prioritize student well-being above all else, ensuring that each child receives the necessary care. Despite the presence of counselors in educational institutions, nurses frequently encounter a broader range of student disclosures, which may otherwise go unnoticed. Effective collaboration among school staff is crucial, and school nurses are fully committed to this collective effort. “(students)often proactively seek out school nurses as a source of comfort and support — presenting an opportunity for school nurses to intervene and provide support before the absenteeism becomes chronic. Some scenarios school nurses provided in the study include: A student goes to the nurse’s office at the same time on the same day each week. The school nurse quickly learned the student struggled with math — the class that conveniently was taking place each week during his visit. A school nurse provided cereal to students who were struggling with hunger and food insecurity. The students would proactively stop by the nurse’s office each morning to receive a meal they were not getting at home, even if it meant having to miss part of the first class of the day. A student consistently came to school exhausted and visited the nurse’s office to lie down and sleep for part of the day. The nurse learned the student had to work long hours each night to help support their family. “These examples provide clues about bigger picture risk-factors related to the individual, their family and broader environment,” Lee said. “What is interesting is school nurses are often the first to become aware, because students often seek them out as a source of comfort and support.” #SchoolEveryDay #chronicabsence #schools. #Schoolnurse # CSN

The National Association of School Nurses (NASN) represents 20,000 school nurses across the country that work to ensure the academic success of students by making sure they are healthy and safe. Children today face more chronic and complex health conditions than ever before. All students should have their health needs met during school hours. School nurses are liaisons to school communities, including parents and healthcare providers, in addition to promoting wellness and improving health outcomes for our nation’s children. School nurses are front line health care providers, serving as the bridge between the health care and education systems. Whether they are hired by school districts, health departments, or hospitals, school nurses look after the physical and mental health of students in school. School nurses, as public health sentinels, engage school communities, parents, and healthcare providers to promote wellness and improve health outcomes for children. For many children living in or near poverty, the school nurse may be the only health care professional they access regularly. Access to a school nurse is a student equity issue. National data indicates 65.7 percent of schools have access to a full-time school nurse [up from 39 percent as a result of Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER funds)]. Unfortunately, with ESSER funds expiring, NASN is concerned the number of school nurses will fall back to former levels and we have already heard this is happening across the country. School nursing services inequities exist from state to state, within states and school districts, and between urban and rural schools. Urban areas schools have full-time school nurses in 70.3% of schools versus rural area schools, where only 56.2% employ full-time school nurses. School nurses ensure that every student is healthy, safe and ready to learn.

Pro Vice Chancellor Health Innovation (Regional) and Dean, La Trobe Rural Health School at La Trobe University
Thanks Tim Dodd for an excellent piece in today's Australian on the La Trobe Rural Health School, La Trobe University and our work to increase nursing workforce supply through a new mid-year entry to the Bachelor of Nursing course and more broadly La Trobe University's Health Innovation Strategy which I'm proud to lead alongside my colleague Professor Russell Hoye. https://lnkd.in/gUxsDFN3 Health workforce crisis prompts La Trobe to open doors mid-year La Trobe University’s Rural Health School will open its doors to nursing undergraduates in the middle of the academic year for the first time in its history as it responds to workforce shortages that are gripping the nation. Australia is facing a significant health workforce crisis now and into the future, with rural and regional communities particularly impacted by widespread shortages, especially in nursing, and long-term health workforce challenges. The mid-year intake will allow up to 130 new students to begin nursing undergraduate degrees across all four of La Trobe’s regional campuses located in Bendigo, Mildura, Shepparton and Albury-Wodonga. This forms part of La Trobe University’s Health Innovation Strategy, the University’s largest ever investment in the health sector, which aims to deliver an additional 4,800 EFSTL (equivalent full-time student load) by 2030 across key areas of nursing, psychology, dental and allied health in Melbourne and regional and rural Australia (taking total EFSTL to around 13,000).

Advocate for Disability Inclusion | Transforming Healthcare Perceptions | Award Winning Speaker | Empowering People with Disabilities and Healthcare Inclusivity.
#Nurse educators, I urge you to refrain from isolating students who disclose their disabilities when measured against a specific set of technical benchmarks. While the transition from nursing academia to practical application is customary, it's essential to recognize the breadth of the nursing #profession. As #educators, our primary responsibility is to guide students toward successful board examinations. However, it remains the prerogative of the students to determine their trajectory within the nursing field. Moreover, it's crucial to acknowledge that individuals with #disabilities often possess valuable skills honed through their everyday experiences.
