Imagine a conversation between two hoteliers. One has moved on, the other still in the trenches. Our topic? Weaving mental health and wellbeing into the fabric of hospitality. The industry is notorious for its high-pressure environments, long hours, and often, the thankless nature of the job. But here's a thought: What if we could change that narrative? The former hotelier shared tales of burnout and stress, common yet seldom addressed. The current hotelier nods, recounting similar stories but with a twist. They've begun pilot programs focused on mental health and counselling sessions. The conversation shifts to the tangible benefits these initiatives could bring about. Reduced turnover rates, heightened guest satisfaction scores—because when staff feel good, they perform better. It's not just about providing a service; it's about creating an experience, both for guests and employees. Yet, we both had the same question. Why isn't this the norm across the industry? The answer is complex but boils down to awareness and commitment. Reach out if you are looking to help your team with their wellbeing!

Imagine a world where every hotel room comes with a side of happiness and every meal is served with a dollop of well-being. The hospitality industry, often celebrated for its vibrant energy and dynamic environment, hides a less talked-about reality. Behind the scenes, the relentless pace and pressure to deliver impeccable service can take a significant toll on the mental health and well-being of its workforce. But what if we treated mental health not as an afterthought but as a cornerstone of hospitality? Imagine staff meetings that start with a wellness check, kitchen shifts that include mindfulness breaks, and management that champions mental health days. This isn't just about creating a healthier work environment; it's about redefining the essence of hospitality itself. When staff members are mentally and emotionally supported, they don't just perform; they thrive. They create experiences that resonate on a deeper level with guests, fostering a connection that goes beyond a transactional relationship. This is where true hospitality begins. It's time we start a conversation about the well-being of those who make the magic happen in the hospitality industry. Because at the end of the day, the heart of hospitality isn't about places or things; it's about people serving people. #hospitality #wellbeing #mindfulness

I was strolling through the bustling lobby of a renowned hotel, a place I'd visited countless times. But this time, something felt... off. The usually vibrant atmosphere was muted, the staff seemed weary, and their smiles were forced. It was like watching a once-bright stage light dim. I'd been called in as a hospitality consultant, specifically to address team building and customer service issues. But as I delved deeper, I realised the root problem ran far below the surface: burnout. I saw it in their eyes—the heavy lids and vacant stares. I heard it in their voices—the monotone replies and lack of enthusiasm. So, how do we combat burnout and keep our hospitality heroes motivated? Here are a few strategies: Prioritise Mental Health: -Wellness Programs: Offer yoga classes, meditation sessions, and therapy resources. 🧘♀️🧘♂️🧠 -Flexible Scheduling: Allow staff to choose shifts that fit their lifestyle. 🔄📆 -Encourage Breaks: Short, frequent breaks can boost productivity and morale. ☕️🚶♀️🚶♂️ Foster a Positive Work Environment: -Recognise and Reward: Publicly acknowledge achievements, big and small. 🎉🏆 -Open Communication: Create a space where staff feel heard and valued. 🗣️💬 -Team-Building Activities: Strengthen bonds and boost morale through fun activities. 🎳🎲🧩 Effective Training and Development: -Continuous Learning: Offer training opportunities to keep skills sharp. 📚🎓 -Career Pathing: Provide clear pathways for growth and advancement. 📈🪜 -Empowerment: Give staff autonomy to make decisions and solve problems. 💪 By implementing these strategies, we can prevent burnout and create a thriving work environment where employees feel valued, motivated, and inspired. Remember, a happy team leads to happy guests. Let's work together to transform tired teams into triumphant ones! 💪🏨✨ #burnout #staffburnout #overworked #employeehealth #workplacewellness #hotelier #hotelstaff #hospitalityworker #hotelierlife #hotelproblems #hoteltips #hotelhacks #hotelmanagement #hotelbusiness

⚠️ Painful hotel Front Desk employee breakdown Front office receptionists and agents often face the challenge of managing difficult guests who may provoke them intentionally, making it exceedingly difficult to maintain composure and professionalism in such high-pressure situations. Typically, there exists a breaking point, yet this is merely a symptom of a deeper issue. This employee had likely been experiencing distress for an extended period. He attempted to restrain his emotions until he could no longer do so, highlighting the immense stress, frustration, and anxiety he was enduring. The subsequent phase involves his instinct to withdraw; he recognises the gravity of the situation and feels a profound sense of shame, leading to tears and visible anguish, which is truly heartbreaking to witness. It is my sincere hope that his colleagues and management can provide him with the necessary support. This incident could have been prevented, as a breakdown in the workplace should not occur due to the actions of a single guest. Access to mental health support can be transformative; expressing concerns early on can alleviate significant emotional burdens. It requires both courage and strength to possess such self-awareness and to take proactive steps toward addressing one’s mental health. The true weakness lies with the individual who cowardly recorded the incident. #hospitality #luxuryhotels #hotelconsultant #hotelcoach #leadership #hotelemployees #mentalhealth #employeeswellbeing

Stress is peculiar to all fields, But when it comes to the hospitality service workers, it is crucial to handle and manage due to the demanding nature of their work and trying to maintain a healthy work environment and well being. Their are various sources of stress that we encounter but the good news is that some are avoidable. 🙌 Avoidable stress- are basically the stress we encounter due to our laxity and failure to plan or follow a laid down procedure. Starting from arriving late to work, to not observing the necessary service procedure, and Pre-Opening procedure like line-up/briefing, checklist, S.O.P , product knowledge and so on. Thus, becoming re-active than pro-active. This adds more stress to the already peculiar ones. Some peculiar stress associated with Waiting staff includes; 🔸Stress when we have an unexpected or unplanned event or issue. 🔸 Stress from handling a peculiar/special or *demanding guest. 🔸 Standing for long time, lifting heavy objects and constantly being on the move. 🔸capacity and capabilities differs amongst staff members They are mostly work related, guest related and sometimes emotional. Here are some solution 👉practice work-life balance- know when to switch 'work mode' ON and OFF 👉Training- A well trained staff are more likely to handle stressful situation effectively 👉Team Building- Supportive team environment for stress management 👉Team Bonding- Building strong bonds among team members fosters a supportive and collaborative atmosphere, which can help mitigate stress 👉Don't Over-promise- but over-deliver, in the worst case scenario, request for additional time or more support. 👉Have breaks and stay hydrated as well 👉Work Smarter than Harder- sometimes we tend to be very very Busy but at the same time, are unproductive. Optimize your work by; < Improving your skills < prioritizing (can use the 2-minutes rule or the Hewers Matrix) < Avoid unnecessary meetings and tasks < leverage on technology (time-saving and productive tools) < Set Smart Targets for smart goals < Declutter your desk and working area Eat to beat stress- You are what you eat Combating stress empowers hospitality professionals to thrive in their demanding roles, ensuring both personal and professional success. What other solutions can you add to the list. #stress #serviceEdge

Peace of Mind - this Holiday Season and Beyond. The hospitality industry is not for the faint of heart, at its core the hustle and bustle culture is often glamorized, and long work shifts and operational hours tend to burn out chefs, servers, and managers alike. It is reported over 50% of hospitality workers say their job is stress-inducing most or the majority of the time. This combined with the stigma around mental health across the industry and the industry-wide gap in leadership knowledge on how to best support the well-being of their employees is a cause for concern. With the added stress of the holiday season, it is essential for leaders to keep morale up and recognize when their employees need help. Three actions hospitality employers can take are: 1. Equip managers with mental health awareness and sensitivity training 2. Offer flexible schedules and rethink workloads 3. Lead by example by sharing your own experiences to create a culture of safety Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/gFdj7T-g For tailored solutions and training options, please contact me: cflynn@hrsolutionsfl.com

I used to think burnout was inevitable in hospitality. Then I learned about "Social Fatigue." It's the exhaustion from constant emotional labor: • Always being "on" for guests, constant and unyielding interactions • Managing difficulties with guests • Suppressing your true feelings in the name of maintaining Professionalism Sound familiar? Here's what's helping our team combat it: 1. Scheduled "recharge" breaks during shifts 2. Rotating high-stress roles 3. Teaching mindfulness techniques 4. Creating a peer support network 5. Encouraging authentic interactions The result? • Happier, more energized staff • Improved guest satisfaction • Lower turnover rates We're proving that well-being and excellence can coexist. I spent many years as both a chef and a restaurant manager wearing my burnout like a badge of honor. Right up until I suffered a minor stroke at 27 years old. Let's normalize prioritizing breaks for our folks in hospitality. What strategies help you manage social fatigue? #HospitalityWellness #EmployeeWellbeing

Let's chat about the life of a hotel manager. Glamorous, right? Well, let's peel back the curtain a bit. Every morning kicks off with a flood of emails in your inbox, each one screaming for your immediate attention. It's like playing whack-a-mole, but the moles just keep multiplying. Who needs a leisurely breakfast when there's chaos waiting for you? Forget about easing into your day or enjoying a cup of coffee. Nope, it's straight into firefighting mode. And those guests? Bless 'em, they want everything to be picture-perfect. Can't blame them, really. They're shelling out for a top-notch experience, and that's on you to deliver. But hold up, who's got your back in all this? The pressure's relentless, and burnout feels like it's just around the corner. Who needs work-life balance? Not you. Family time? Hobbies? Forget about it. You're too busy keeping everything running smoothly. And let's not even talk about the facade you're expected to keep up. Smiling through the exhaustion, pretending like everything's peachy—it's exhausting. So here's the deal, my friend. You're not alone in this. Take a breather, and prioritise yourself for once. Trust me, the hotel will survive without you for a hot minute. PS. Seriously, take care of yourself. Burnout's no joke. If this reminds you of someone (you), you are committed to ending burnout, overwhelm, and stress. DM me " SELF" and I will be in touch.
