Director, Africa Region - Pandemic Action Network / Executive Director - Resilience Action Network Africa
In a welcome step, World Health Organization's Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus will convene the Emergency Committee under the International Health Regulations ASAP to advise on whether the ongoing outbreak of #mpox constitutes a public health emergency of international concern or a #PHEIC. Attention and action to date to contain the escalating spread of mpox has been inadequate. Now is the time for both African and world leaders to put intentions of solidarity to practice through political leadership + millions more dollars in funding + increased access to tests and vaccines (millions of doses) to save lives. It's beyond time to apply the lessons of inequity of COVID and take action to stop outbreaks before they become pandemics. https://lnkd.in/d8rz3jgd

As the #mpox outbreak continues to impact high-risk countries, World Health Organization African Region is taking decisive action to strengthen Africa’s health security. We recently briefed the United Nations (UN) on our interventions, including enhancing regional collaboration, strengthening rapid response mechanisms, and ensuring equitable access to vaccines, treatments, and diagnostics. By fostering cross-sector partnerships and empowering communities we aim to build resilient health systems that can effectively manage the ongoing outbreak and prevent future ones. As we implement the Global and Continental Strategic Preparedness and Response Plans, collaboration with the UN is crucial to align efforts and protect vulnerable communities. By working together, we can prevent future outbreaks and safeguard our communities. #GlobalHealth #HealthSecurity

The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the surge of mpox in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and several African countries a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC). IPPF is deeply concerned about this development and stands in solidarity with the affected communities. This rapid spread of a new mpox strain underscores the urgent need for a coordinated global response. We call on international partners to mobilize resources and support efforts to curb this outbreak, ensuring equitable access to vaccines, diagnostics, and care. IPPF will continue to closely monitor the situation and provide updates as they become available. #ActNow #Emergency #HealthForAll

The Task Force for Global Health, Inc. is at the World Health Organization's 77th World Health Assembly 🌏 Our Director of Global and Federal Affairs Emily Conron delivered our Individual Non-State Actor Statement today: “The Task Force for Global Health is dedicated to eliminating neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) through drug donations, operational research, and collaboration, aligned with the NTD Road Map. To accelerate and sustain progress, we urge WHO and Member States to prioritize services for NTDs in universal health coverage objectives, and ensure the transition of care for persons affected by NTDs to the primary health care system when elimination as a public health problem has been validated. As NTDs target the most underserved and hard to reach populations, UHC can be evaluated by its ability to reach those affected by NTDs with comprehensive services: from prevention, early detection, diagnosis and treatment, to long term care and psychosocial support. The Task Force stands committed to support WHO and Member States in the pursuit of these ambitious but essential aims.” Learn more about our #WHA77 participation in our recent May Dispatches article ▶️ https://bit.ly/3R6d5bm

#ICYMI You can rewatch last week's thought-provoking webinar which addressed how the evidence generated in the IMI RESCEU and PROMISE Projects can be leveraged to ensure novel #RSV immunisation solutions reach people. A great illustration of the power of public-private partnerships in the vaccine field! Innovative Health Initiative (IHI)
“By age 3, 90% of children have had RSV at least once.” After decades of work, Europe has the tools to prevent severe RSV in infants and older adults. These must now be implemented into immunisation programs. As outlined by panelists at a recent event organised by the IMI PROMISE Project, public-private partnerships play a critical role in this mission by bringing together key stakeholders to tackle complex challenges. Yesterday was #WorldHealthDay, and this year’s theme is “My health, my right.” According to the World Health Organization (WHO) Council on the Economics of Health for All, there are at least 140 countries that constitutionally recognize health as a human right, but not enough countries are passing and implementing laws to ensure access to health services. For the public, their key messages are: ☑ Know your health rights ☑ Make decisions about your own health ☑ Protect your right to health as a basic human right ☑ Promote the right to health as an intrinsic pillar of our broader human rights ☑ Champion health as a priority Learn more about PROPEL Health’s policy work: https://propel.pub/web
