Navigating the Journey: The Challenges and Triumphs of an International Student in the UK It was October 2006. I vividly remember arriving at Leeds Airport on a dark, gloomy afternoon. It was my first day as an international student in the UK, starting my journey at the University of Leeds. As a single mother, leaving home and my child behind to pursue a postgraduate degree was daunting yet necessary for our future. The beginning was tough, but the International Office team made all the difference. Comprised of both home and international students, they were understanding and supportive during moments of homesickness and doubt. Thanks to them, my experience transformed, and I grew immensely. Four years after completing my MA in Leeds, I pursued a PhD, interviewing international students. It felt like coming full circle, understanding their challenges and fears. The cultural aspects were the most challenging, with different social norms, academic conventions, and daily interactions often feeling overwhelming. This sometimes made me feel isolated and unsure of myself. Support from my supervisors, Professor Robertson and Professor Dale at the University of Bristol, was crucial. They provided both academic and empathetic support, aiding me in adjusting and ensuring I did not veer towards failure. The debate about the significance of international students in the UK is inevitable. UK universities benefit greatly from their presence, not just financially, but in terms of the global role the UK plays. For international students, a UK university on their CV opens doors to better career opportunities. International students need committed and understanding support from their universities. Comprehensive international services and empathetic academic teams, including supervisors and tutors who respect students’ backgrounds, are essential for helping them settle in and succeed. Recent statistics highlight the growing number of international students in the UK. As of 2023, there are over 605,000 international students enrolled in UK universities, a significant increase from previous years. This influx underscores the UK’s appeal as a leading destination for higher education. However, recent articles highlight that Germany is now offering a more attractive higher education experience, with prestigious universities, free courses, and reasonable living expenses compared to the UK, US, and Australia. Can the UK surpass the US, Australia, and Germany to become the leading destination for international students within the next five years? #InternationalStudents #UKUniversities #HigherEducation #StudyAbroad #StudentLife #GlobalEducation #PhDJourney #LeedsUniversity #BristolUniversity #StudentSupport

Did you know that in 2024, the United States reclaimed the top spot as the most preferred study destination among prospective international students? The latest Business of Branding report from CarringtonCrisp confirmed the finding, finding that 42% of prospective international students desire to study in the United States compared to 32% indicating desire to study in the UK (2nd place). The study also found that among prospective international students, the US is perceived as the most expensive study destination, but even with that, the perceived quality of a US-based education drives the US to the top. #intled #highered #marketingandenrollment #pathways #edtech https://lnkd.in/gvyXDjE8

Continuing our focus on improving services for international students, we've taken our recent work (link to blog in commments) researching and identifying primary challenges and have translated these into potential options and solutions to be explored by universities. We're looking at addressing these challenges in a comprehensive and holistic approach that encompasses accommodation, academic support, social engagement, and return on investment considerations. We fully acknowledge that there are many tensions and likely changes surrounding UK universities recruiting international students, or indeed international students seeking UK provided education, however if predicted downturns in numbers become reality, there will still be half a million students from overseas deserving a better experience. We are also leveraging design thinking principles, through which universities may foster innovation, collaboration, and inclusivity, creating an environment where international students thrive academically, socially, and personally. There are also direct and indirect benefits to professional services and administrative staff participating and contributing to these activities, leading to influencing of improved working practices and fulfilment of being able to make an impact. The list of themes which we will be covering in the coming weeks include: 1) Accommodation Challenges and Innovative Solutions 2) Academic Journey and Learning Support 3) Student-to-Staff Ratio and Personalised Attention 4) Social Life and Combating Isolation 5) Return on Investment (RoI) for Overseas Students 6) Co-creation of Support Systems 7) Adaptive Curriculum Design 8) Develop Inclusive Community Engagements 9) Enhancing Financial Aid and Scholarships 10) Introduce / Improved Continuous Feedback Loops 11) Adapting to changes in legislation The above will be summarised into parent themes of: 1) Academic Life 2) Student Life 3) Financial / Funding 4) Wider Community Support Each Thursday in this series, we'll share the next installment. Hope you find them interesting, informative and inspiring to take action to improve provision for international students primarily, but in essence all students and directly involved staff teams also. Embracing these recommendations will not only enhance the overall student experience but also contribute positively to the global reputation and attractiveness of UK universities. How might your organisation adopt #servicedesign and #designthinking principles and approaches to bring benefit to international students especially, but also to all your student communities. #education #employability #wellbeing #highereducation #highered #universities #studentsuccess #studentoutcomes #studentexperience #internationalstudents

📚 **Evolving International Education Landscapes: The US as an Increasingly Preferred Study Destination:** In light of recent policy shifts in the UK, Canada, and Australia, there's a burgeoning interest among international students in the United States as a prime study destination. These policy changes, while varied in nature - share a common consequence: Reshaping the global flow of academic talent and reconsidering the accessibility of quality education. The United States, with its diverse array of institutions, cutting-edge research opportunities, and inclusive policies, stands at the forefront of this shift. It offers an unparalleled academic environment that fosters not just learning but holistic development. This renewed interest in the U.S. emphasizes the critical role of policy in shaping educational trends and the global mobility of students. **Implications for Educators and Institutions:** 1. **Adaptability and Inclusivity:** There's a pressing need for U.S. institutions to further embrace adaptability and inclusivity, ensuring policies and practices meet the diverse needs of international students. 2. **Enhanced Collaboration:** This scenario presents an opportunity for increased international collaboration, facilitating cross-border academic partnerships and research initiatives. 3. **Focus on Student Support:** Institutions must prioritize comprehensive support services for international students, from mental health resources to career guidance, enhancing their academic journey and future prospects. **For International Students:** The evolving landscape represents a myriad of opportunities but also necessitates thorough research and preparation. Prospective students should consider not just academic programs but also the support and community that institutions offer to international students. **Conclusion:** As we witness these changes, it's imperative for all stakeholders in the education sector to engage in dialogue, share insights, and collaborate to ensure that the U.S. not only remains an attractive destination for international students but also a nurturing ground for the global leaders of tomorrow !!! Let's embrace this shift as an opportunity to reinvigorate the international education sector, fostering a more connected, educated, and inclusive world. #Education #InternationalStudents #PolicyImpact #HigherEducation #GlobalMobility #USStudyDestination #Webster #STEM James Vigus

I recommend reading this full article. It really helped me to frame the different types of international student mobility in all its complexity— as the authors describe it, the "messy terms, messy data, and messy practices."
📚🎓International student mobility is not easily categorizable. Students travel internationally for many different reasons, including to work, immigrate, and escape persecution. ❓So why do we continue to position them as relatively homogenous with common motivations and experiences? 💡In the short article below, Bernhard Streitwieser, Rajika Bhandari, Ph.D., and I discuss the 'messiness' of international student mobility terms, data, and practices. We suggest scholars and practitioners alike to rethink our conceptualizations of internationally mobile students. One way is to recognize the intersection of (1) the discretion to move, and (2) opportunity through movement - both of which operate on spectrums. This allows for a broader constellation of possible forms of international student mobility, in particular forced mobility. Thanks to the Center for International Higher Education for publishing! To read more, see also our longer article "Classifications and clarifications: Rethinking international student mobility and the voluntariness of migration" published last year in Globalisation, Societies and Education (https://lnkd.in/gJ8zAEUf). https://lnkd.in/g-aw3ztY

Happy Sunday, and as students are finalizing their plans for next year, I found some motivation for them: The European Commission has introduced a plan for a European degree to improve higher education within the EU. This new type of degree aims to encourage greater student mobility and skill development by being jointly awarded by universities across Europe. The proposal includes steps to make quality assurance processes more efficient and to increase the recognition of qualifications across member states. It also stresses the importance of fostering attractive and sustainable academic careers, supporting diversity, and ensuring inclusivity in the workplace. #Mobility #Europe #highereducation
