It Takes an Army to Create Art: I’m part of the Theatre Gargantua TD Emerging Theatre Artist Roundtable this year. My intention to join was simple: make new artist friends. Around 10 emerging artists were selected to be part of sessions where we get mentorship, share resources and have profound discussions on how to create art sustainably and collaboratively. So much about storytelling through art—notably film and theatre—usually requires an army to make. Finding this army is I think the hardest part of professional art making. I’ve had experiences where I find the right people but the external circumstances do not allow for a collaboration. Or I find people and discover a little too late that while we were speaking the same language, we were speaking in entirely different dialects. I had a mentor joke that finding creative partnerships is harder than finding a romantic partner. In other fields the collaborative project is a bit more objective and standardized. Metrics and scopes are set. The process is concrete. When it comes to creating art together, especially art that changes the world, it’s a little less so. The process of creation needs to foster trust and vulnerability to co-create bravely. #emergingartist #creativeprocess #storytelling #theatre

In 2014, I directed Arthur Miller's ALL MY SONS at the University of South Alabama. As is the case with everything I direct, I started first with a metaphor to hold the story together. That metaphor was a pride of lions. I won't go into detail about how I arrived at this visual, but to date it is one of the most exciting and successful containers I've ever used to bind the different elements of theatrical storytelling together. It provided a consistent vocabulary for communicating intentionally with designers, actors, and technicians. It was not for the audience to know. There were no lions on stage, or used as marketing visuals, or announced before the beginning of the show. No one came up to me afterward and said, "Cool lion theme." It was for me and the production team. And it is one of the most important things you can do as a successful public speaker and presenter. Choose a theme, a metaphor, or a question which influences and informs your story, content, and action ask. It will motivate your decisions, guide you when you're stuck, and ensure your audience experiences a cohesive message. Too often public speakers leave to chance valuable moments which are well within your control. The great ones, however, pick a container to guide the work. Happy Monday :) #effectivecommunication #publicspeaking #communication #communicationstrategy #metaphor #question #speakintoaction #theatre #directing #allmysons #universityofsouthalabama

What is my superpower? Besides being 'Super Dad' (self-anointed and proudly owned!), one of them is theatre - the kind that values collaboration, self-organization, and empowers everyone involved. The kind of theatre that marries imagination with expression, where rehearsals are moments of deep presence, preparing for the unexpected and organic to emerge. Anything can happen... I’m no star director or performer, but years in theatre devising and cultural immersions have reshaped my worldview in unexpected and wonderful ways. My facilitation approach in organisational spaces is deeply rooted in these expansive experinces of theatre-making. Theatre has taught me to shed inhibitions, connect mind and body, and grant permission, to myself and my collaborators, while guiding others in creative exploration beyond the stage. Curious to get a taste of this? Join me and Tarryn Lee for a one-day '#TheatreSprint' in Linden, #Johannesburg on October 5th, 2024. No theatre experience is needed. If you’re a coach, leader, facilitator, or creatively curious, join us to uncover new layers of your creative self and explore self-expression in fresh, embodied, and unexpected ways. What You’ll Experience: 🎭 Play with your thinking, broaden perspectives, and build adaptability through fun, engaging methods. 🎭 Dive into theatre-making to inspire and enrich your work with artistic creativity. 🎭 Learn innovative ways to engage your body in creative work and collaboration. 🎭 Explore devised-theatre methodologies to create and perform. 🎭 Reflect on how to practice and strategically apply embodiment in your creative work. "Making theatre means to live enchantments…to invent mirrors of the world as we know it, or of worlds as dissimilar from reality as a fantastic delirium.” —Eugenio Barba Curious? Yesterday, I had the opportunity to participate in a transformative body training workshop tailored for actors. Despite its simplicity, the session uncovered some fundamental mistakes often overlooked in our craft. It's remarkable how something as basic as maintaining proper alignment and gaze can significantly impact our performances. During the workshop, we delved into the nuances of gaze and body alignment—two pillars essential for any actor. We discussed how societal norms often lead us to cast our eyes downward, rather than maintaining a direct and upright posture. Learning to train our gaze to encompass a 180-degree angle demands conscious effort, yet it's indispensable for cultivating a commanding stage presence. Equally vital was the emphasis on body alignment. Ensuring an even distribution of weight enables us to move fluidly across the stage, effectively conveying the emotions and traits of our characters. It's these foundational principles that lay the groundwork for compelling performances. As actors, it's imperative that we commit to practicing these fundamentals daily until they become second nature. It's through dedication and persistence that we refine our craft and elevate our artistry to new heights . . . . . #movement #bodytrainning #theatre #workshop #learnunlearn #actors #practise

"you can stay on Teesside and be successful" Great initiative here in the Tees Valley - actioning and investing in their commitment to culture as a key element in making their place successful, attractive to talent and liveable. This was a key finding in the #66 region research that found that we need to be positive and take action to support our future talent, especially in areas that have age-ing populations or are seen as not great for talent development. #Culture + #environment + #digital innovation and commitment; these things help to ensure that younger people stay, return to, and thrive in our #place - places that are culturally, environmentally and digitally ambitious are great places to live. This seems laughably obvious. Commitment to these things is truly #placechanging, but it has to be done strategically, it's not just about a few grants here and there, it has to be hard wired into the vision. Investment in 5 creatives like this - £30k each - as part of a strategy, is inspired and inspiring. Elsewhere we see #Durham calling itself 'the Culture County' - good work! 👏 The #66 is the area across the north of England connected by the A66 - Cumbria, Durham and Tees Valley. The #66 report and Exec Summary here https://the66.club/docs/

At Unlock Drama, we harness the power of theatre to explore complex topics and foster deep empathy among participants. Our projects challenge individuals to confront issues they would typically avoid, using drama as a medium for dialogue and understanding. Essential in rehabilitation. This immersive approach not only draws the audience into the narrative but also facilitates a deeper engagement with the content, allowing for a profound exploration of the characters’ emotions and decisions. By placing participants in the shoes of others, theatre becomes a tool for reflection and growth, helping them see the broader impact of their actions. Through this dynamic interaction, we witness remarkable transformations in our participants, as they develop new perspectives and emotional intelligence that are crucial for personal and communal healing. www.unlockdrama.com rebecca@unlockdrama.com #TheatreForChange #EmpathyThroughArt #UnlockPotential

“A goal without a plan is just a wish.” Video six in a series of 12 is a simple reminder to plan. In my experience, taking the time to carefully plan is consistently overlooked in many functions in the performing arts sector. Interestingly, the way in which the industry plans for a performance from a technical production perspective is (mostly) meticulous. However, a lot of functions around the production can seem reactive. Accessibility as a reaction is not acceptable. Yes, being flexible in the moment is important, but great flexibility takes great planning. Bringing Access into a more centralised planning process has been rewarding. It has moved the work into a more conscious and therefore consistent workflow. The 2024-2025 season is already vastly improved because we are more prepared rather than just reacting. 2025-2026 season will improve again. I have said previously that action is needed, but it cannot always be so reactive. The results of meticulously planned ‘Access action’ will always reap more rewards for all involved. #AlwaysOnAccess #Accessibility #Theatre #Planning #ArtKind #Inclusion Video ID. Two 2025 goals! 🚀 ✨ Goal 1️⃣ Collect 50 rejections 😳 Career aspirations and creative projects (like pushing forward my television pilot…) require putting myself and my art in front of others. I make slow progress even when the outcome isn’t in my favor. In 2025, after thoughtfully applying and believing I have a chance, I aim to receive 50 rejections. ✨ Goal 2️⃣ Attend 50 live artistic events 🎉 In 2024 I experienced 52 pieces of theater (not including seeing the plays I wrote!). Looking at my list brings joy! In the persuit of joy, this year, my vision expands. I aim to attend 50 live events: including theater, immersive art, gallery openings, comedy, live virtual events, concerts… etc. What theater (and other live events) should I see? #rejections #resolutions #theater

🎭 Embracing the Stage: How Theater Transformed My Life 🌟 Reflecting on my journey through the world of theater, I'm compelled to share the profound impact it has had on my life. From the earliest moments of stepping onto the stage to the countless rehearsals and standing ovations, each experience has sculpted me into the person I am today. My life lessons from Theater 🍀 Courage in Vulnerability: Theater demands vulnerability. Stepping into character requires shedding inhibitions and embracing authenticity. Through portraying diverse roles, I've learned to confront my fears, break down walls, and connect with audiences on a deeply human level. 🍀 Collaboration and Teamwork: No production is a solo endeavor. Theater thrives on collaboration, requiring seamless coordination among actors, directors, stage crew, and beyond. Learning to listen, communicate, and compromise within a team setting has been invaluable both on and offstage. 🍀 Resilience in the Face of Adversity: The show must go on, regardless of the challenges that arise. Theater has taught me to adapt, persevere, and find creative solutions amidst setbacks. Each setback becomes an opportunity for growth and innovation. 🍀 Empathy and Perspective-taking: Stepping into different characters' shoes fosters empathy and a deeper understanding of diverse perspectives. Whether portraying a real life inspired character or a fictional character, theater encourages us to explore the complexities of the human experience with compassion and open-mindedness. 🍀 The Power of Storytelling: Theater has the ability to provoke thought, evoke emotion, and inspire change. As storytellers, we have the privilege and responsibility to amplify voices, challenge norms, and spark conversations that resonate far beyond the stage. The impact of theater extends far beyond the confines of the stage. It has equipped me with invaluable skills and perspectives that transcend the boundaries of performance art. Whether pursuing a career in theater, business, education, or any other field, the lessons learned under the spotlight are universally applicable. I invite you to share your own reflections on how theater has influenced your life. Together, let's celebrate the transformative power of the performing arts and continue to inspire and uplift one another.
