Firefighting named most physically demanding job Many firefighters enter the profession because of their passion of helping and serving others, but according to research, they’re doing it at the risk of their own health and safety. “I'll be honest, I wasn't very surprised. I've been in the profession for 24 years now and not in a sense of comparing it to others, but I just know the demands that come along with it,” said Shreveport firefighter Brandon Lee. Firefighting is the most physically demanding job in the country. That's according to the Bureau of Labour Statistics, which tracked the physical requirements of about 480 jobs at more than 56 000 workplaces. Why is it important for lifeguards? The main roles of a lifeguard are to prevent accidents and spot potential trouble/hazards before they become life-threatening, and responding to emergencies when needed. They also educate the public about the risks associated with aquatic activities and how to be Water Smart. What is the most important part of being a lifeguard? Responsibility. From the outside, it may look like lifeguards are paid just to stand or sit by the side of the water, but there is so much more to the job. Keeping people safe while they swim and play by the water is a huge responsibility and the core purpose of any lifeguard.

Procedure to dispose the expired fire extinguishers: Fire extinguishers are the first aid equipment to deal fire accident at the initial stage. As per IS:15683, IS:16018, IS:2190, the fire extinguishers are designed to perform the expected outputs, and the maintenance criteria also explained. In those standards, there is not much information on the disposal of fire extinguishers after completing its expiry. As per the image attached, there was an extinguisher burst-out accident that resulted serious injury on a workman. As per the image posted on the newspaper, it seems to be a gas-cartridge operated fire extinguisher. The gas cartridge would be filled with CO2 gas and the pressure would be 100 to 120bar. When you discard these extinguishers, the gas cartridge will pierce the weakest part of the cylinder and hit the person nearby. I hope the accident would have happened like this. Hence careful disposal of the expired fire extinguishers is a must. There are two types of fire extinguishers, stored pressure type and gas cartridge/gas cylinder type. The medium used in the fire extinguishers are water, Dry chemical powder, Mechanical foam, CO2 and clean agent gases. The procedure to dispose the expired fire extinguisher is given below. DISPOSAL OF EXPIRED FIRE EXTINGUISHERS Procedure for DCP Type fire extinguisher – Gas Cartridge type 1. If the extinguisher is not used, it is to be operated. 2. Unscrew cap for one or two turns and wait for the residual pressure to release. Then slowly unscrew completely. 3. Bury the remaining powder in the earth. As per Dry chemical powder BIS standards IS: 14609 and IS: 4308, It is non-toxic to humans and it does not pollute soil also. 1. Dismantle parts of extinguisher and squeeze to scrap it Procedure for Water based fire extinguisher – Gas Cartridge type 1. If the extinguisher is not used, it is to be operated. 2. Unscrew cap for one or two turns and wait for the residual pressure to release. Then slowly unscrew completely. 3. Pour the remainder in solar evaporating tank 4. Dismantle parts of extinguisher and squeeze to scrap it Procedure for CO2 Type fire extinguishers 1. Operate and empty the fire extinguisher. 2. Weigh the extinguisher and compare reading with the weighment punched on the neck and ensure it is empty. 3. Dismantle parts of extinguishers and cut the cylinder to scrap it. Procedure for Powder Type fire extinguisher – Stored Pressure type 1. If the extinguisher is not used, it is to be operated. 2. Unscrew cap for one or two turns and wait for the residual pressure to release. Then slowly unscrew completely. 3. Bury the remaining powder in the earth. As per Dry chemical powder BIS standards IS: 14609 and IS: 4308, It is non-toxic to humans, and it does not pollute soil also. 2. Dismantle parts of extinguisher and squeeze to scrap it.

Or... your extinguisher could let you down when you need it. Just as you wouldn’t risk a pool without a lifeguard, why gamble with your business's fire safety?
