"Beginning in the mid-1800s, Indianapolis served as a locus of the state’s growing labor activity. By the early 20th century, the city had become headquarters for several national and international unions. Indianapolis’ central location and its elaborate rail system made the city more accessible to the rest of the country than most cities. At least 12 major unions selected Indianapolis for their headquarters, thus establishing the city as the “labor capital of America” by the early 1900s." (Source: The Polis Center, IU) Today, The Indiana State AFL-CIO (American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations) represents nearly 300,000 working Hoosiers and advocates for the rights and wellbeing of all workers. Indiana played an important role in the history of our labor unions, and as the daughter of factory-working parents, I am proud to be endorsed by the Indiana AFL-CIO, which is a part of so many working families' history. As your future Senator, you can be sure I will protect our workers. I will fight for better working conditions and for living wages that give you breathing room, above mere subsistence (breathable wages, as I call it). In America, if you work full-time, you should be able to support your family. You can count on me to push Indiana toward a brighter future for all Hoosiers! #mccray4USSenate #LaborUnions #Indiana #AFLCIO #Unions #USElections #endorsement

Michigan employers, take note! Now is the time to begin preparations to be in compliance with these changes. Our national Employment Counseling Practice is here to help. Thanks Alexa Bradley and Peter Shapiro for this important article. And, since I have a daughter in school at U of M, I would be remiss if I did not say, GO BLUE! #employmentlaw #michigan #goblue
On July 31, the Michigan Supreme Court issued a highly-anticipated opinion finding that a pair of citizen-initiated #ballot proposals – the Improved Workforce Opportunity Wage Act and the Earned Sick Time Act (#ESTA) – will go into effect on February 21, 2025, as they were initially proposed by the citizens of Michigan and adopted by the state Legislature in 2018. As Associate Alexa Bradley and Partners Mary Smigielski and Peter Shapiro explain in a new #ClientAlert, the state high court determined that the Legislature’s significant changes to the ballot initiatives - carried out through what was dubbed the “Adopt-and-Amend Approach” - violated the #Michigan Constitution. 📢 Teacher Strikes 2024: What to Expect? 2023 was marked by numerous teacher strikes across England and Wales, with National Education Union members leading actions across 11 days. But as 2024 unfolds, the big question remains: Are we on the cusp of more educational disruptions? 🔍 Current Union Stances The NEU and NASUWT continue to push for substantial, above-inflation pay rises, reflecting long-term corrections in pay scales to 2010 levels. Whilst inflation rates are projected to drop, governmental resistance remains strong and the likelihood of meeting union demands seems slim. 🗳 Indicative & Formal Ballots: March sees both unions conducting online preliminary ballots to gauge interest in continued strikes. Should members show support, formal ballots could follow, setting the stage for potential action after the teaching union conferences in April. 💼 Budget Day Impact: The Chancellor's upcoming budget announcement on 6th Marcg could be a game-changer for strike appetites. Yet, it would require significant educational funding increases to alter union strategies. 🎯 Strike Likelihood & Engagement: Past ballots suggest varied engagement levels among union members. The NEU has historically seen higher participation rates, hinting at a stronger propensity for strike action although the NASUWT did manage to meet the threshold in their last ballot in July. 🤔 Are All Teachers On Board With Strike Action?: The teacher community remains split, with almost half of union members not taking part in previous ballots creating an unknown entity over these ballots. Within the Edapt subscriber base, individuals hold diverse views on strike actions with some joining action last year whilst others were actively against it. As an apolitical entity, Edapt remains committed to providing objective analysis and edu-legal support for all educational professionals regardless of their views. 📅 Potential Strike Windows: Predictions hint at possible strike actions towards the end of the Summer Term and in early autumn, aligning with strategic pressure points in the political calendar. 👀 Read the Full Analysis: Delve deeper into the intricacies of the upcoming teacher strikes, union positions, and potential timelines. Understand the comprehensive landscape to better navigate the future of education. 🔗 Read Full Article Here - https://lnkd.in/dH7rvahg Do you agree with the above analysis?
