🌟 The Difference Between Care and Support 🌟
In the realm of chronic illness, the terms 'care' and 'support' are often used interchangeably, but to me they mean very different things and are things that I seek to receive and give in very different situations generally from quite different people.
🤲 Supporting vs Caring: Unravelling the Definitions:
Support: allows you to live your best life and extends beyond your physical health. It encompasses encouragement, understanding, and the empowerment of individuals to navigate their daily lives with resilience.
Care: for me is linked to maintaining your health status. Removing the need for existing medical attention or reducing the risk of future medical interventions. It's absolutely about fostering an environment which promotes well-being and dignity.
Care and support, should be orchestrated harmoniously and be something an individual is involved with, not something that is done to them. From my perspective, all too often care is something that is imposed on somebody when actually what a person needs first and foremost is support and then care becomes a natural progression an appropriate level of support.

Empathy
(noun)
1. the psychological identification with or vicarious experiencing of the emotions, thoughts, or attitudes of another
At SMS Healthcare, we expect our Care Team members to approach their coworkers, other healthcare staff, patients, and visitors with the same level of empathy. We encourage them to consider, “How would I want to be treated or spoken to if I was experiencing that person’s situation?”

I love partnering with healthcare staff who understand the need for psychological support during illness and injury. Not only is there satisfaction in knowing patients' needs are addressed in entirety, but it helps the medical staff experience other dimensions of wellness in themselves too! Reach out today to build effective intervention that addresses the whole person!
